history.
To be born into House Eluwe is to be born into a house of privilege. The wealthiest household in all of Nocturnia, the Eluwe are well known for their heir, the bearer of the sunwalker gift. Rarely is the second child of the House spoken about in the same breath, and to Theano — that second child — this comes with endless irritation.
Born sickly, Theano was raised carefully, coddled by parents that worried for her survival first and her desires second. Most of her early life was spent indoors, for she could not exert herself without gasping for breath. This was a source of endless frustration, for Theano was born hungry. It was not the common sort of hunger, rather it was the hunger to be seen, witnessed, acknowledged. She wants the world to dig her teeth into it and make it hers. She wants to be admired, but there were few opportunities to become worthy of admiration when she was relegated to the dark halls of her home, forbidden to approach the light that her elder brother so easily bathed in.
Left to haunt the darkness, and with the light within reach, Theano grew envious of her brother, the resentment festering next to her adoration. This drove her forward, seeking any way to set her apart from her brother, to be seen for herself. This went beyond submerging herself in her studies— a duty that she took with relish as she was, and is, ever hungry for knowledge and the power it can bring. Artistically inclined and initially bedridden, at first Theano focused on writing and art. Then came her foray into the fiddle, which did not require lung capacity.
By the time she had regained enough health to assuage most worries and allow her to live a regular noble life, Theano had gained a collection of hobbies that would declare her as a fully rounded noble lady. From embroidery to flower arrangement, she had practice on all, but she wanted more. She does not want to be left waiting at the wings of the grand play that is life, she wants to take center stage. Something relatively difficult, when she herself tended to compare herself to her brother and find herself wanting. In comparison to his easy warmth, easily compared to the warmth of sunshine described by sunwalkers’ accounts, Theano sees herself more as the unrelenting rays of daylight that harm all those who have not been given the gift of daywalking.
It does not help that no matter what she does, her parents cannot look beyond the frail daughter that she had been. Despite it all, Theano tries and tries again. Involving herself in the trade of the origins of the Eluwe’s wealth was the beginning, but with better health, she had also taken to promoting their products. That is a beginning, but despite the strides she has made, she still feels unacknowledged before her family’s eyes, and she wants more. Why should his brother aim for the crown, when she is here and not burdened by the weight of heirship? Why shouldn’t she be chosen, when she is also a member of the wealthiest house in Nocturna?
Deep inside, she fears the answer, for a dark and hidden part of herself tells her that she is simply not enough. That she is ordinary.
Theano tries her best to ignore that voice.
extras.
Theano asked her parents to teach the mercantile aspects of their house, from distributions of the crystal, gems, and water pearls found underneath their castle. After years of work, she has gained enough of her parents' trust to be a more proactive part of the trade and the merchant aspect of operations, but she also has her hand on helping artisans come up with new ideas for jewelry and other crafts which their resources can be used for. She also has her hand on promotion of their products to other noble houses, through letters and more.
She is rather fond of music and dancing, but while her health has greatly improved, she still needs to pace herself with dancing and other physical activities.
While she has tried her hand at many hobbies, her favorites so far are playing the fiddle, poetry, and sketching ideas for jewelry.
