‘The Argumentative Indian’ by Amartya Sen
Amartya Sent needs no introduction but for the sake of formality, he is a Nobel laureate and a Bharat Ratna awardee. Definitely one of the finest economist of the past century. His concepts like that of capability, his criticism of John Rawls and his own views on justice are well known. This book in particular is surely one of the finest ever written on India and the best part is that it indeed brings out the argumentative Indian within its readers and for non-Indians it surely is a fine source to acquaint themselves with India. It takes on almost all aspects, the culture, the society, the history, the economics, the past, the present and the future. It is a must read for anyone with slightest of interest in India. When a Nobel laureate writes, the expectations are very high and this book is a pleasure, the readers are in for a treat and the brilliance of Sen is inevitable on every page. Also another great part is the way in the book is written, any chapter can be read anytime. A delight to read, a must.
