You can't cross the sea merely by standing and staring at the water.
Rabindranath Tagore
‘The Plague’ by Albert Camus
Camus, though always hated being tagged an existentialist writer and thinker but his work did certainly had an inclination towards it. Along with Jean Paul Sartre he took existentialism to its very peak and for his work, very rightly so, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
On a personal level, I am a huge admirer of his work and The Plague certainly is the crown jewel. It is almost impossible to ignore a work of such importance if you want to read the very best and thus even if you don't have a bent towards existentialism you sure will be amazed by the examination of human nature done in the work.
To start with I would like to ask a question, What will you do if you know that you are almost certain to die and that all your loved ones too are, also you cannot do anything to prevent it and have no control over any thing, neither do you know who will die next nor do you know if you will survive. Well, this might seem an exaggeration but when plague breaks down all of a sudden in a small city with not much medical facilities, it is only a fraction of the entire truth.
People want to live and to what extent they can go to secure it, both their own and the lives of their loved ones, this is an astonishing account.
A doctor, faced with the dilemma of duty and love, of responsibility and self interest, of community and family, he fights every aspect, he fights with himself.
An account which would only make you believe more in yourself, it is a must read for any book lover, but, only meant for the serious.
‘The Argumentative Indian’ by Amartya Sen
Amartya Sent needs no introduction but for the sake of formality, he is a Nobel laureate and a Bharat Ratna awardee. Definitely one of the finest economist of the past century. His concepts like that of capability, his criticism of John Rawls and his own views on justice are well known. This book in particular is surely one of the finest ever written on India and the best part is that it indeed brings out the argumentative Indian within its readers and for non-Indians it surely is a fine source to acquaint themselves with India. It takes on almost all aspects, the culture, the society, the history, the economics, the past, the present and the future. It is a must read for anyone with slightest of interest in India. When a Nobel laureate writes, the expectations are very high and this book is a pleasure, the readers are in for a treat and the brilliance of Sen is inevitable on every page. Also another great part is the way in the book is written, any chapter can be read anytime. A delight to read, a must.
