The Federal Theater presents: The Pursuit of Happiness by Armina Marshall Langer & Lawrence Langer
A gay rollicking fun fest on the stage in 3 acts
A summary of the play from Broadway Plays and Musicals: Descriptions and Essential Facts of More Than 14,000 Shows Through 2007 by Thomas S. Hischak:
The Pursuit of Happiness [9 October 1933] comedy by Alan Child, Isabelle Louden. In a strict Calvinist Connecticut town during the American Revolutionary War, the displaced Hussian soldier Max Christmann (Tonio Selwart) falls in love with the colonial lass Prudence Kirkland (Peggy Conklin). After they are caught "bundling," the local minister Rev. Banks (Seth Arnold) insists on an immediate marriage which is fine for the couple so they wed and Max joins the American cause. Also cast: Charles Waldron, Eleanor Hicks, Hunter Gardner, Raymond Walburn. Critics, who knew the authors were really producer Lawrence Langner and his wife Armina Marshall, welcomed the bright character comedy and it ran over eight months. The play was later musicalized as Arms and the Girl (1950).
“Hussian” here is a typo or mispelling of Hessian, Germany mercenaries who fought on the side of the British during the American Revolutionary War. Another description of the play includes this adorable comment:
Max, a young man from Austria, was given two options: joining the Hessian mercenaries and fight for the British or die. Max chose life, but now he has deserted his outfit and wishes to join the Colonial Army. Max loves the American spirit, carries a copy of the Declaration of Independence in his wallet and believes that everyone in America is just "chasing after happiness."
absolutely-fatal got me in a high school drama kick, so I’m a-sharin’ photos from plays in high school that weren’t lost to the aether. This was 2001-2003, so a crappy 1mp digital camera and no backup means a few photos are missing. Ophelia and Milton are the biggies that I know got photographed.
In chronological order!: Meg Brockie from Brigadoon (Brockie’s namesake), with Angus MacGuffie, Charlie Dalrymple, and Jeff Douglas; Puck from Midsummer Night’s Dream (Which, BTW, I played THREE TIMES in high school); Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat ... with Joseph! The guy who played Angus MacGuffie was Bottom when I was Puck.
I did a few things in college, theater-wise, but I haven’t really done anything since graduating.
I am accomplished.
Friend called me today asking if she could take me on a spur of the moment adventure to a Grease thing. She says it's gonna be like if Grease had audience participation like Rocky Horror. And I just managed to get together a pretty decent greaser look in under an hour and I am juST PUMPED!!
I'd see it if I were in Seattle! From City Arts:
The party started before the play began. As the audience filed in for the premiere of Dan Savage’s Miracle! at Intiman last Saturday, the actors milled around the space, inviting people onstage for Jell-O shots. A giant banner hung above the stage promising, this play will offend. NC-17 warnings decorated the lobby.
One would expect no less from Savage, infamous for his vivid sex column among other things, and a play based on the idea of Helen Keller as a drag queen. It’s a ridiculous and hilarious premise—and the ensuing performance delivered a satisfying bounty of buoyant one-liners and saucy puns.
