I have always wanted to become a theater actor...
...well, except that I'm timid, socially awkward, and an introvert which make me totally unfit for this seemingly wonderful profession that I have always fantasized about.
Last semester, I bravely enlisted myself in a theater class. It is already evident to me that I am not a performer, but who cares, it was my last semester in the university. Might as well do everything than regret not doing it afterwards.
The semester went by and well, I didn't excel in class as the performing one. Surprise! For some predictable reasons that I was already expecting, I just can't let go entirely of myself when it was my turn to act. But I did quite good in the management and production area.
Fast forward, finals came and we staged the play, "The Would-be Gentleman" by Moliere (see above brochure). It was fun and chaotic at the same time. I played different characters including a dancing Spanish maestro, a Bruce Lee inspired Kung Fu master, an Indian prince who just mumbles gibberish, and Leo, a middle-class class man who was in love with the Don's daughter (read: imagine the costume changes I had to do).
In the end, my professor was kind enough to praise what I did there but still made the remark to let go. She also noted the progress I achieved which I was able to notice as well by the time I stepped out of Prof Michelle Washington's class.
I learned a lot, not only about theater, but also on my capabilities. I did not regret taking this class even if it meant sacrificing some of my thesis time in exchange for grueling hours of rehearsals and practices.
And oh, me and my partner won as best producers!
Someday, I plan to relive the surge of euphoria I was able to feel while acting on a theater stage. Who knows? I might actually get the courage to stand in front the audience again, center-stage, as a professional actor.
Okay, maybe just behind the scenes.

I should really let go.
