from @wildestanimal - It's not very often you get lucky enough to be close to the world's 2nd largest animal, but to be in the water with 3 quite relaxed fin whales so close together was a special moment. You can see why they call them the greyhounds of the sea. They are built for effortless speed with their streamlined shape and huge muscular tail which makes up most of their body. They don't get as much attention as the blue whales being 2nd largest, who ever remembers 2nd place, right? Can’t believe the year is almost coming to an end!  We are grateful for having such an amazing 2018.  We are so lucky we got to end our travels this year in the beautiful Azores.  Our last video of the year was filmed with the lovely Mr. Chicken who warmed our hearts 💕 Meeting him and visiting his shop was an unexpected and great way to end our year.

I embarked on numerous field recording expeditions whilst exploring the Azores islands. The wide variety of volcanic activity made for some excellent recordings, all achieved by arriving as early as possible to avoid any tourist chatter. From gurgling, boiling mud pits and shrill steamy hot springs to the deafening call of hoards of frogs in mating season and the powerful roar of the atlantic ocean the islands were filled with sonic intrigue. 

My favourite encounter came completely by accident though. Whilst descending a ravine from an early morning hike to capture the sounds of the hot springs of lake Furnas I heard low and melodious singing drifting up the valley towards me, I had heard about the Romieros briefly before, groups of male pilgrims who return to Sao Miguel once a year to walk from church to church singing in unison in remembrance of the souls lost in a spate of seismic activity on the island. I never thought I would be lucky enough to encounter them or snatch a quick recording of them singing as they ambled past me.
