I shot the guys at Berkley for several reasons. Firstly I thought they were a great representation of what the hotel stands for; 5 star elegance and superior luxury.

I see the attire, the bowler hat and tailcoat of the concierge, emulating over 100 years of Berkley history. In the background, the polished hotel front and contemporary potted plants provide a nice juxtapose and reminder that although this hotel is steeped in tradition, it remains a innovative leader in the world of design.

For me this moment captures what looks to be a member of senior management checking in on the concierge / chauffeur staff, perhaps briefing them on the days duties. I think this speaks volumes about how this hotel works hard to deliver service of the highest standards for it's guests and visitors. The expression in the face of the more elderly gentleman suggests that they take their work very seriously, emphasised further by the earpiece worn by the chauffeur allowing him to stay alerted to any arrivals or departures.

I chose to edit this as black and white to highlight the classic elegance and sophistication of a scene, which is what this image for me is all about. Sometimes black and white serves to capture the mood of a photo and it's subjects more than colour, and for me it helps accentuate certain aspects - in this case my subjects. What the gentlemen were wearing against the light colour of the hotel front provided a striking contrast that is picked up better in black and white than it would have been in colour. The contrast enables the eye to naturally be drawn first and foremost to the subjects of the photo, who are there to tell the story of the essence of what for me this image is about.
