The Beyond (1981) When a real estate agent inherits a hotel, in an attempt to fix the plumbing she opens up a world of hell. In my last post I said I’m still unsure on Fulci films, I feel myself falling on the side of not really now. I try to go into every film with optimism, even after going cinema with a friend to watch The Dark Tower! And I did the same here, much to my dismay. Fulci films have had me on the fence for a while but I’ve only really enjoyed one thoroughly, so I think I’m falling off! Not to say they’re awful films, they’re not, but they’re for a certain... taste! The opening was actually quite promising and I thought it was gonna go well, but it all kinda went downhill. The gore was there but it wasn’t quite on the levels of City of the Living Dead. Again though the story just falls short, there’s so much that just doesn’t make sense, or is left unexplained, for some reason one of the main characters is rocking an action replay max because his 6 shot revolver has more than 6 shots in it... it also auto reloads after it runs out... The ending for me again just left me bewildered and I kind of understood it but kinda didn’t. Everything was just vague, it left too much to be explained and I found it lacking, the ending had a Bruce’s Price Is Right type soundtrack with a Stars In Their Eyes smokescreen to see us out... maybe Fulci fancied himself for the British prime time! Overall, The Beyond is an average 80’s horror flick. You’ll get your fill of deaths and a couple of shock sequences, but for a deep delving storyline to keep you engaged... I’d probably look BEYOND this... This edition from @arrowvideo comes with a double sided poster with sleeve options and a collectors booklet!
