Can Bugs Be Delicious? This Place Says Yes
If you’ve dined at Ofrenda in the West Village, you’re undoubtedly a fan of owner Jorge Guzman’s cocktails and chef Mario Hernandez’s unique Mexican cuisine. And if you’re like me, the only time you typically explore new restaurants is when your favorite chef begins a new endeavor. So lovers of the West Village spot—and creatures of habit—rejoice: Guzman and Chef Hernandez teamed up earlier this year to open another sumptuous Mexican eatery, The Black Ant.
Like Ofrenda, The Black Ant offers decadent fare and innovative cocktails, but the similarities end there. Here, the menu pushes you to the edges of your comfort zone in a surprisingly delicious way: many dishes incorporate insects and other surprising ingredients. Luckily, you don’t need to be Andrew Zimmern to appreciate black ant guacamole or grasshopper hash with grilled corn and queso fresco. And while you can tantalize your palate during brunch with black ant granola, you can also play it safe with biscuits and chorizo gravy or a grilled octopus bacon roll topped with morita ketchup and jicama slaw. Wash it all down with one of Guzman’s cocktails, like the prickly pear margarita. If your taste buds had heads, they'd be spinning.
Add a new brunch spot to your repertoire here.
