Have you ever considered that you intentionally choose people with complicated issues to form relationships with so you can take care of them?

Pokemon AU

((Well, it works out that I don’t really know Pokemon beyond the original 151, because that’s what Acel would stick with. He’s a competitive person, and when he sets his mind to something he does it in a more or less methodical way. Talk to him about the newer types of Pokemon once he’s finished capturing — or at least encountering, in the cases of the really legendary ones — all the originals.
As a trainer, he’d be okay but nothing special. Competitive and relentless, but not so much that he’d put his Pokemon in danger or unduly tire them out. He’d train them on a rotating basis, getting them all up to the same level and then steadily working them up from there. Depending somewhat on the area he’s currently traveling in, he’d keep a pretty well balanced team with him based on the wild Pokemon and types of Trainers he’s likely to run into, and on who needs training up.
And he’d probably always have one or occasionally two he lets walk around with him instead of keeping in Pokeballs. After the tragic death of his lover Ariel, who worked for Team Rocket, his Pokemon help take care of him whenever he ends up drinking too much. They worry and occasionally go seek out his friends for help — the cat-like ones prefer finding Joey, the bear-like ones and the more buff types tend to go for Sergej, the rest will mostly just look for whoever’s closest.))
If your character looked into the mirror of erised, what would they see?
((He’d see his parents still alive. Ariel still alive and healthy, though at this point with someone else — probably Scott, and both of them happy with that. Sergej happier, and with his daughter back. Himself, with Joey and successfully sober.
And a good warm pair of socks.))
Then why don't you go be with him?
It would not change anything… *His hand drops down to search for a bottle, which is on its side on the carpet, empty. Finding no distraction there, tears begin to run down his face.* He left. It would not change that.
Don't you miss him?
*Acel looks up from his sprawl on the sofa with bloodshot eyes. He's only dimly aware that this person is a stranger and shouldn't be in his house.*
*All he can do is whisper, in a voice as small as an ant,* Oui.
Ariel is dead. Drug overdose out of respawn limits, we're sorry for your loss.
*The note sits open on Acel's desk, clearly read. Everything else is gone, cleared out. Even the mattress is stripped and bare.**A great many of the room's contents have ended up in the dumpster behind the base. The man himself is gone without a word.*

Was that laughter from the shadows? No, couldn’t be…
*Acel casually moves Ariel a little so the shadows are directly behind him, then sends them a pointed "Yes, what do you want?" look.*

{I missed you too so much.}
*grabs his bum a little* {I'm sorry, I tried to visit. But now we can make up for all the time we've been apart...}
