To me (and without going into possible but unlikely theories) Marco was really in love with Jimmy, but Jimmy didn’t realize, or if he knew, he didn’t really know how deep that love was and tried to ignore it. After the season finale, Jimmy wears his ring for years and years and it can’t just be the concept it represents. It also shows how much Jimmy cared for Marco, even if it wasn’t romantically (like in Marco’s case). This is my realistic take. Cause let’s be honest, we know how Vince is when it comes to queer representation. Subtle is a generous way to put it.
Now, if I’m free to headcanon, I’d say they were banging all along their friendship and that the reason Jimmy didn’t visit him when his mother died was cause he was afraid he wouldn’t be able to leave once he reunited with Marco (cause he loved him too much). A more realistic version of that would be that he was afraid he would go back to Slippin’ Jimmy and disappoint his brother.
