madoka vs utena!!

Which has the better protagonist: gotta… give it to my girl Utena here!! she drove me nuts sometimes with her cluelessness whereas I feel Madoka’s innocence/naivety was definitely pulled off in a less irritating way BUT there’s something about her that makes me love her a lot anyway… she’s got strong opinions and a lot of personality which is something I love in a protag, whereas I feel Madoka’s personality falls by the wayside a lot

Which has the better villain: Kyubey/the whole incubator thing gets a lot of points from me but like… End of the World/Akio? literally is there a better villain? he’s so manipulative and it’s so satisfying to see him duped… also fuck Touga and Saionji… basically any dudes from Utena, they’re awful so they win this one

Which has the better plot: I think Utena’s was a lot more original tbh, I still haven’t seen anything like it and it’s been around for a long ass time… I love PMMM’s plot but putting a dark twist on the magical girl genre has been done plenty before so I think Utena wins this one also!

Which has better cinematography: listen. listen Utena’s animation and art takes… a lot of getting used to. the movie is definitely better but the anime takes some adjusting to… PMMM however has beautiful animation and Inu Curry’s work trumps like everything for me, so PMMM.

Which one is more fun: DANG they’re both pretty heavy but Utena does throw in some silly episodes every now and again whereas Madoka is just like. suffering 24/7. so I guess Utena?

Which one makes me think the most: THEY BOTH GIVE SO MUCH TO THINK ABOUT… honestly I think Utena might make me think more? there’s so much deep characterization to literally every character and there’s a lot of symbolism and metaphors to uncover!

Which do I watch when I want to relax: PMMM simply because I’ve seen it so many times that I know it like… off by heart, whereas Utena has so many subtle hints and characterization that I always wanna pay so much attention

Which do I watch when I want it to consume me: OH NO… honestly they were both like huge interests of mine for a long time so they both consumed me but… I think probably PMMM. Utena is so long that I find it hard to get like properly consumed by until near the end where everything actually… happens

Which is my favorite: I LOVE THEM BOTH SO MUCH… but I think… maybe PMMM? I love Utena so much but I can admit that it can be hard to sit through and it’s super repetitive, so it loses some points there v__v sorry Utena….

13. does writing roleplay things in public spaces make you uncomfortable?

Not particularly. I’m a little less comfortable about it now that there are gifs involved, and not just text, because I’m a little paranoid about people sitting behind me on the bus, but I’m still writing bits and pieces of replies on public transit. But like, I gif in public too, so I don’t have a lot of shame when it comes to rp things in public spaces. It’s just the raunchy things I write exclusively at home, and those don’t come up super often.

14. what do you do after you see a person has replied? do you read it immediately, or do you wait for it to show up on the dash? do you like it, draft it immediately, etc?

Generally I’ll do a first readthrough as soon as I’m aware of it and then draft it. If it’s a thread I’m really excited about, or a particularly entertaining reply, I might like it, but you can only do that once, anyway, so that’s not something I make a habit of. Not counting dustverse stuff, because so many zingers.

17. what is your biggest obstacle to writing every day, if time doesn’t count?

Muse, for sure. Some days I have to battle to get my focus and interest where it needs to be, which usually end up being the days I work on other writing pieces for the character (dabbles/self-paras mostly) or lurk on Pinterest for the evening.

24. what’s your thought process when you format? any unspoken rules you follow?

I keep my formatting pretty minimalist. I don’t like going into the HTML to edit post formatting, so I keep text the standard size, and then I haven’t felt much of an urge to bold my dialogue, which is the other trend I see a lot? I’ve thought about it a few times, but I don’t think I’ll remember to do it consistently, and inconsistency bothers me more.

I think tagging on my rp blogs has always been something that, at least in the past, set me apart a little bit, especially in the dustverse. I can’t remember if I was the first to do it, but I know I tagged literally every interaction with the character blog url. Now that I’ve moved into other rp spheres, it’s gotten a little more sophisticated than that (I usually have a character tag for each character, now, and a thread tag, so I can reread the thread chronologically later, or whatever). But that’s also something I’m seeing a lot in other groups, so it’s not so unique anymore.

I also (now that I’m in groups that use gifs) put gifs at the bottom of the post almost exclusively, unless I’m having a hard time splitting a paragraph that ends with dialogue and a paragraph that starts with dialogue. Part of that is consistency, but part of that is also that I do a lot of my first reads of threads on mobile, because I’m out of the house for so much of the day while people are replying, and it makes it easier to see where my reply ends and my partner’s begins if the gif is at the bottom.

Not quite related to final post format, but while I’m working on drafts, I have some shorthand using the brackets [ ] that I’ll use so I can see things that still need to be added, or stuff I want to look at again.

5. do you listen to music while you write?I don’t need music while I write, but sometimes I have it on? At a low volume or something instrumental like post-rock, because I have p bad ADHD and I can’t listen to lyrics and write at the same time lol

9. have you ever written a serious reply intoxicated?UMMMM maybe? Not like, Super drunk or high lol, but probably have written replies just a little bit buzzed. When I’m actually Intoxicated I cannot type anything recognizable as English or any other human language

10. how much do you proof-read as you are writing vs. proof-read at the end?Tbh sometimes I don’t proof-read at all lol, but when I do, I guess I’m more likely to do it at the end, quickly

11. when you are writing a reply, how much ahead in the thread do you plan?I like to have all of the major beats of a thread planned out before I start it. As in like, I like to know the setup, the possible points of conflict, and the desired outcome. Unless it’s settled ahead of time, I don’t like to be blindsided or dragged off into the weeds. Also important to me to have an open line of ooc communication with the other mun during the thread so we can stay on track and not step on each other’s toes.

12. is there ever been a time when you’ve had to drop a roleplaying partner because you’ve found their writing style exhausting?Yeah lol,,,, see previous question. I’m likely to drop a thread if the mun is communicating poorly or they aren’t doing their part to move the thread forward. I understand that plot isn’t a major priority for every writer, some people enjoy conversation and improvisation more, but that’s the sort of thing that can frustrate me, especially in a “Serious” thread or if I don’t know the mun super well.

I have a lot of anxiety about strangers reading my writing (even keeping my rp blogs on public is a huge passive stressor sometimes) but I’ll write on my phone occasionally if nobody’s over my shoulder.

This is slightly weird, but sometimes if I’m really excited for a reply… it takes me longer to read it? Like I want to savor it or draw it out I guess? So I’ll read little bits over a period of sometimes hours lol. If the other mun isn’t too impatient.

17. what is your biggest obstacle to writing every day, if time doesn’t count?The biggest obstacle that keeps me from writing every day is that I don’t really like to write lol which I know sounds kinda harsh but writing is not… an activity I can do passively or effortlessly, it takes a lot of energy and effort for me to do it, it drains me quickly, etc. If I had to write a novel it would take me 10 years easily. I want to be able to read a thread at the end and feel like we did a good job, I want to be able to develop my characters and plot ideas with people, but the actual writing part isn’t my favorite lol.

Um… I guess the only formatting I do is make sure there’s only the latest reply on my reblog?
