Number 24: Band AU [[ Oh my gosh I laughed so hard when I got this one ]]
"This... seems to be the right place," Asch fon Fabre murmured to himself, brushing his dark red hair back from his face.
A few weeks ago, his seven year old brother Luke had come home from elementary school with a flier one of his friends had been passing out; advertising try-outs for some sort of rock and roll band. The thought of trying out for an idiotic neighborhood garage band was hugely unappealing to the naturally quiet, serious, somewhat prudish older redhead, so he'd brushed the thing off and tossed the flier in the trash, despite Luke's protests.
Life went on as usual. Asch drove his little brother to school on the vintage motorcycle he'd saved up for a year to buy and restore, then quietly went about his day as a straight-A high school student. He didn't have many friends. He really didn't need any. His appearance -- unnaturally dark red hair, his "mean scowl", and borderline-delinquent manner of dress lead other people to keep their distance, students and teachers alike. He was okay with that. Friends... they would only cause complications. Being that Asch lived alone after the death of his parents and was the only one that could take care of his brother, complications were something Asch couldn't afford to have.
One night, he sat in the big armchair in the living room, Luke nestled on his lap, quietly reading the younger boy a bedtime story. Luke seemed close to sleep, his wide, emerald green eyes shuttered, his red lashes beginning to tap out a soft beat against his pale cheeks. Asch was tired himself, and was about to call it a night when Luke's soft voice drifted up to his ears.
"Bro...," Luke inquired softly. "Why don't you wanna join that band?"
"You're still on that, Luke?" Asch wondered, almost amazed at how annoyingly resilient his brother could be at times. "For one, between school, work, and you, where would I find time for something like that? Second, it's not something that interests me." A small lie. Not one of any real consequence though.
"Big bro really loves music, though," Luke insisted through a yawn. "I know you do. And you're really good on your piino."
"Piano," Asch corrected gently.
"Pi-aaaanh-noh. You're really good at it. Even the electric kind."
"Synth."
"Sith."
"..." Pick your battles, Asch. Sighing, Asch ran a hand through Luke's hair. "Why is this so important to you?"
"Because you don't have any friends... you're always with me or at school, like you said! You don't... seem very happy all the time."
"I am happy with you, Luke," Asch said sharply. "Don't think that way. I really don't need anyone else but you."
Luke seemed pleased by that, judging by the way he stretched over Asch's lap, grinning like a cheshire cat. "Well, yeah, I am pretty awesome," he admitted. "But you know, Asch... I've noticed that you look the happiest when you're doing music."
Asch grimaced a little. That was true. Music was one of the few things Asch was really passionate about. But music wasn't practical. It couldn't raise two boys, or put two boys through school. Which is why getting caught up in a band would be a bad idea.
"That may be," Asch conceded carefully, "but I don't have to be in a band to make music."
"You have to be in a band to make friends who love music as much as you do," Luke countered.
Sighing, Asch leaned back. "Why is this so important to you?"
"Because I want you to be happy. The happiest ever. Mom and dad... they woulda wanted you to be happy too."
Asch was quiet for a moment. He silently weighed the pros and cons of humoring his tiny double. Eventually, the tiny, treacherous voice in the back of his head -- the one that knew he was interested in the band, interested in music -- tipped the scale in the tiny redhead's favor.
"I'll try out," Asch said. "There's no guarantee I'll get in. But I'll try out. Happy?"
The smug grin was all the answer he really needed.
And that brings our story to today, and brings Asch to standing outside a surprisingly fancy house in the nice part of town, his portable synthesizer strapped to his back.
"....Here goes nothing."
Asch rang the doorbell.
"Oh, but they do. Haven't you heard the legends? It's an honor to be chosen by them. However, if you do not wish to beat responsibility of this gift that is /our/ child... Well... I pray the gods have mercy on your soul~ The storks don't take kindly to those who refuse their gifts~" Joshua was milking this as far as it would go, it was too fun not to.
"I…!" What kind of wrath could a stork lay on him?! "I…" He was being backed into a corner. What to do? What to do?!
"…I… will take responsibility, Joshua of See-Boo-Ya…"
