Sam’s heart sank, his chest constricting to the point of agony. He couldn’t breathe, his lungs to constricted to work properly. Nausea seeped into his blood stream, panic following right behind it. No, this couldn’t be happening. He had tried to help him, tried to save him, but by the time he had gotten to his lover, it was already too late.
Strong arms wrapped around the brunet, holding him closer to his chest. “No, don’t talk like that, Buck. You’re not going to die, not today. I’ll find a way to save you.” his voice was steady, reassurance radiating off every word. But the look in his eyes was one of pure panic. He had no idea how he was going to help Bucky, had no way of doing anything. Not while they were here, and he had no way of moving them, not without making it worse for him. Which only meant he had to sit there and pray for some kind of miracle. But Sam didn’t believe in miracles.. no this was how his luck went.
His body shook as he held onto the brunet, pulling him closer to his chest as he bent his face down. Shaky lips pressed against Bucky’s forehead, his grip on the man tightening as he held in a sob. “I love you so much.. I don’t think I ever said that enough.” laughing lightly, he looked down into those crystal blue eyes, a sad smile spreading over his lips. His fingers brushed across his cheek, moving to cup the other mans face in a soft caress.
"I swear, James, if you die I will find a way to bring you back just to kill you myself. This is not how this is ending. I refuse to let you go this easily.”
The words had slipped out without him really meaning to. They were supposed to be a thought, something kept to himself because he knows this is the end. He can’t breathe right, every single intake was a struggle and he could feel the rattle inside his chest. The others embrace was warm, he pushed into it even with the pain that ripped through his body.
It wasn’t supposed to end this way. I gave in so it wouldn’t end this way.
He hopes that this isn’t in vain, even if this wasn’t the plan. That there’s no more bloodshed. That Tony figures it out. There’s been too many killed, too much life lost and too many people hurt over this stupid reform. It needed to stop, and maybe, maybe the only way to end this civil war was with the death of Captain America.
There were noises all around, sounds of panic and he knew that it wasn’t going to be long until somebody forced Sam away. God he didn’t want that. There was no comin’ back from this, the least the could do was let him die where he wanted to be.
“Said it plenty of times,” he manages to rasp out and fuck he can taste that copper taste. It’s tainting his tongue, tainting his words. The world feels like its spinning. “Sides, its not somethin’… that needs to be said… every day. Y’know?”
His hands moving up, to the side of Sam’s face. His thumb gently strokes over his cheek, hand shaking before he moves it back so he’s cupping the back of the man’s head.
“Love you too… don’t forget it,” he regrets how soft and shaky his voice is. “And wipe those tears. Don’t… don’t cry over me. I’m…” God it was hard to speak. “Not worth tears ya punk.”
He tugs the other into a light kiss, partly to stop him from making a rebuttal, but mostly because he wants to kiss him just one more time before he gives up the fight for good.
