We spoke to Yuanwen Liu, the current holder of the world record in The Case Of Scary Shadows (8836 points), and he was kind enough to share the following strategy tips with us.
1. The key to getting a high score is keeping the number of shadows as low as possible. To reduce the number of shadows, player needs to do his best to catch all fireflies. In order not to miss any firefly, you need to make sure shadows and bees aren't in your way.
2. Always approach the acorns from the bottom up.
That way, shadows will always be underneath you and won't get in your way. Fireflies always appear at higher locations, so you will have plenty of space to chase them. Keep in mind that if you feel the firefly will appear soon and the acorn is on the ground, make sure to jump to the second floor right after eating it. That way you’ll have time and space to catch a firefly.
3. Try to always eat honey right after catching a firefly, so that when you're fleeing from bees and eating acorns, you won't need to worry about a sudden appearance of a firefly. Chasing a firefly with bees and lots of shadows usually results in game over. Also when you have less than 4 shadows, firefly won't appear.
4. I always lure bees into the corner of the stage, that way I can wrap to the other side and get plenty of room before bees return.
5. Last but not least, if you have many shadows, don't eat the honey, catch a few fireflies first. You can start eating honey once you feel confident again.
