Last week Kevin O'Leary boasted that (if he was PM) he is going to force Nova Scotia to allow fracking. Now I know that most folks here, myself included, wouldn't support this. But, I'm still a tad concerned. How could he possibly force a provincial government to change their laws on this? Does a Prime Minister have this kind of power?

It is a provincial responsibility to dictate whether fracking is allowed or not in the province. So technically I don’t think he could force Nova Scotia to do it.

But the Federal Government could threaten NS to comply by withholding funding such as healthcare, infrastructure, etc.

Kevin O’Leary as PM would be a frightening prospect.

What are your thoughts on the claim that Justin Trudeau is “white supremacist terrorist”? I'm personally unsure of how to feel regarding that statement because I am not a racial minority and can't speak in behalf of POC experiences, but it just doesn't seem like an accurate statement to me. Trudeau has his problems, not keeping promises being the main one, but I just don't think that he fits the bill of a supremacist.

To me it was a reference to the hypocrisy of his government continuing colonial practices that continue to discriminate and harm indigenous people, at the same time saying that he’ll be welcoming to immigrants.

That’s what the comments leading up to that phrase were implying:

“Don’t cheer,” Khogali said. “We know what that is, we know what that manipulation is, it is what this country is founded on—erasure and silencing of the real history of this land. The genocide of Indigenous people, in which the state is founded on. The enslavement and genocide of black people, in which the state is founded on.”

Khogali continued, “When Justin Trudeau says that he is a liar, he is a hypocrite, he is a white supremacist terrorist.”

I’m not sure I would personally go that far in describing Trudeau, but I can see where the comment is coming from.

I'm not all that fond of corporate companies myself, but I have no disrespect for the Irving family. They have always given back to Atlantic Canadian communities by providing resources for community development, creating a plenum of job which the Atlantic provinces are in dire need of, and donating and raising thousands for many charities. They place a very high emphasis on the rights and safety of their employees as well. They truly are an Atlantic Canadian family. I dunno, what do you think?

I wasn’t disputing that. Jobs are obviously good.

My issues are about the media empire (near monopoly in NB) and essential ownership of the province. That is extremely problematic.

Its also problematic that so many Atlantic Canada jobs are owned by 1 company. If anything ever happens to the Irvings it would be a catastrophe.

Do you know much about the Free Alberta Party? I've only heard talk about them over here in the Maritimes. Plus I checked their website. So I'm curious if you'd have more information since Alberta is your neighbor.

I haven’t heard much about them other than that they want to separate from Canada, as other separatist parties have tried before.

I don’t think they have much support or I would have heard more about them, since I follow dozens of Alberta news sources, journalists and activists on twitter.

I'm a bilingual Maritimer and I can say that while the Québécois arrogance frustrates me, I do feel empathetic. Bilingualism is difficult, and even most bilinguals struggle in speech. I think a lot of monolinguals are blindly prejudiced towards that.

So I know that there are quite a few Ulster-Scots that live in N Ireland. And I know that caused issues back in 1919. Is there still any tension between the Irish and Ulster-Scots? Or has everyone made peace with the situation? Just a wee bit curious

Well apart from the 40 odd years of Sectarian and political conflict that occurred during the Troubles things here are fine and dandy…

I have friends and family that live out in Alberta, and I've been deeply concerned for their safety. As far as I know they're all okay at the moment. But, I sincerely thank you for your coverage and support during this grave situation.

I’ve heard that Alberta isn’t doing too badly with the fires. There has been some issues with smoke, but nothing as bad as what BC and Saskatchewan are dealing with. According to the latest figures, there’s almost 100 fires burning in Alberta, so I hope they can come under control soon.
