Renata hated the taste of cigarettes — but it was required in the Remnant. It was a reminder of God’s judgment, after all. They never expected to be around long. So she kept with the vow of silence, the smoking, the wearing all white and taking every single hit that people threw her way.

She wrote on her pad of paper, writing terribly scribbly and almost unreadable.

"I think I need a drink,” Roman said, almost to himself. All he wanted was to drink every moment that he was not on shift — hell, he wanted to even on shift. Sobriety was not his forte, of course. It was the worst part of his life, having plenty of clarity to think about his Departed sister.
