“I see.” Isa nodded, as though she actually understood. She did in a literal sense, but not why these people believed what they did. “It’s a shame, don’t you think? We lost some amazing people. I don’t think I could bear it if we lost anyone else.” 

That was incredibly true. Renata was pained with knowledge of her unborn child Departing. It was more than just a shame. She continued to write, making sure that she tried to snag Isabella before she decided to leave.

For once in her life, Isa wasn’t ready and raring to cause a scene. A small part of her wanted to know how this woman had become involved with the group. What had they promised her, or brainwashed her to think? All questions she felt would be seen as intimidating, so instead she listened. 

“The way we all used to?” She asked out of genuine curiosity, “you mean how we used to live with the ones we lost?”

Renata nodded when the woman asked her question. The old world is over. Is dead. The Departed, the Sudden Departure — it changed everything. There was no way that they would keep surviving for long, something must be coming. Something Biblical, maybe? Something just apocalyptic? Who knew.

THEY’RE EVERYWHERE IT SEEMS. In his neighborhood, at the store, outside work. An endless mass of white that treads slowly behind the others. Though unlike most he wasn’t bothered by them. There were worse things to endure than someone holding up a notepad and smoking a cigarette.

❝ You got a light? ❞ He asked, gaze briefly diverting to the notepad in her hand. ❝ I know all of you smoke, and I left mine back at my place. ❞

Renata stared at him for a moment, wondering if she was allowed to give him that lighter. But she offered it anyway, continuing to take a drag on her own cigarette.

‘ have you considered the g.r. yet? ‘

Isa had experienced very few encounters with the Remnant, and any that she could recall had lasted about five minutes maximum because she liked to put a stopper on them pretty quickly. She knew what they were about, and she didn’t really have the time or the patience for their messages and beliefs. But this time felt a little different - the young woman she was faced with didn’t strike her as your typical Remnant member. 

Isa approached, observing her sign again before she looked up at her. “This a whole new world for us then, hm?”

Renata nodded when the woman asked. It was nice to receive a genuine question, rather than the act of violence instead. She continued with the spiel that was given to her by the leaders of the Remnant chapter — the ones that they used to try to recruit rather than torment. Renata never liked to torment people, specifically. 

‘ yes. the world is different now. there’s no point in living the way we all used to. ‘

Renata hated the taste of cigarettes — but it was required in the Remnant. It was a reminder of God’s judgment, after all. They never expected to be around long. So she kept with the vow of silence, the smoking, the wearing all white and taking every single hit that people threw her way.

She wrote on her pad of paper, writing terribly scribbly and almost unreadable. 

The Old World is over.
