What purpose do sponsoons serve?
They are like sideweels but for ships
They increase the ships beam, thereby increasing the stability.
Somewhere in the past they changed the rules for stability, and some ships where on the edge of those rules, then you saw a lot of those ships adding sponsoons. as the beam is a major factor in the calculations for that, it’s b³ in there somewhere.
Nowadays you don’t see them much anymore. Except for heavy lift ships, they are the most likely to carry them.
