The Cool Greenhouse, The Cool Greenhouse (Melodic, 2020)

The reason why I immediately liked this record is merely musical science. If your songs are built on a simple repetitive 2-note riff, that’s like a good animated gif. It draws you in, either because it’s very satisfactory or because the loop is cut in a place where your brain wants to jump forward to the next scene and expects something else to happen.

The Cool Greenhouse had started like a very quirky bedroom project on their early EPs, with minimalistic drum machines sounding like not much more than a metronome, but now they’re a full 5-piece band that records in a studio—and that could go either way, as we know. And yeah, they might have a lost a bit of grit in the process, but their sound on this album is full, diverse and exhilarating.

Of course, like in the case of Sleaford Mods or the more repetitive Fall numbers, the vocals and lyrics are what jumps at you from these songs. The deadpan almost spoken delivery of Mr. Tom Greenhouse, complete with Smithian “ahs" at the tail-end of words, is just the perfect vehicle for the satirical vignettes drawn by his lyrics, dealing with things like people-pleasing politicians, absurdist market towns, incels, Jeff Bezos, David Cameron, Margaret Thatcher, Donald Trump and the general disillusionment of “dispossessed pinko middle classes”, as they beautifully nail their whole aesthetic.

It’s easy to dismiss their songs as formulaic (“Outlines”, though exquisite, really really sounds like a Perverted By Language outtake) and maybe their ironic and literary style may sound radical chic-y to some, but there’s no denying the talent that went into this record. The devil’s in the details: the actually funky, funny and exciting stop-and-go in the middle of “Dirty Glasses”; the swirling psychedelic ending of “The Subletters pt.2” or the glitchy, random electronic noise eruptions peppered throughout most of the songs. Or a unexpected asides that make you smile like “… or with that pig” (go look for that). The record comes with funny and earnest liner notes and a small bag of seeds you for your own cool greenhouse.
