Spending a little time with myself tonight #thecreativehabit #twylatharp #costumedesign #officesupplies #rosé
"It is vial to establish some rituals- automatic but decisive patterns of behavior-- at the beginning of the creative process, when you are most at peril of turning back, chickening out, giving up or going the wrong way." Twyla Tharp, The Creative Habit Getting back into routine for this new season of creating. . . . . . #routine #studio #studiolife #artstudio #workspace #freelancelife #freelanceillstration #twylatharp #habits #routine #thecreativehabit
This book was first recommended to me 5 years ago by @angela.bubash. I was in my first workshop at Penland School and I scribbled down the title and author and thought nothing more. It was not yet relevant to me. This summer has been a much needed break from the pace I've been going since leaving Seattle 3 years ago to pursue my career full-time as an artist. My challenge has been to resolve myself to the idea that this pause is ok. After so much time in structured environments, what does my studio practice look like? What is my daily routine? What drives me to create beyond a deadline, a position, an expectation? It was there in the beginning - what is it now? For those who might be in transition both physically or artistically, I could not recommend 'The Creative Habit' by Twyla Tharp enough. Whoever wants to start a conversation on this subject, reach out! ______________________________________________________ #PSA #book #recommendedreading #twylatharp #thecreativehabit #artist #jeweler #sarahrachelbrown #selflove (at Knoxvegas)

Week 2: Character
Conjure and Manifest: Commitment Ceremony, 2015
During week two we choose the thing we would commit to for the duration of the course. Some choose daily mediation, others intentional movement. I choose a raw vegan diet for the duration of the course. We made sacred these commitments through ceremony, remembering that:
Commitment gives you Character..
Character is when all your unique qualities—all aspects, flaws, and facts—are under your control. You illuminate every time you consistently follow through. This leads to a good reputation and strong character.
This is so important for artists. Especially artists who want to make art their profession. No one will tell you “Its Monday, time to write or paint”. The practice must be born from within us. We must commit to it often, if not daily.
In order to support our commitments we took wisdom from our reading last week, Twyla Tharp's, The Creative Habit. In it, she discusses Rituals of Preparation. Creating a space, ideally within the first 20 minutes of our day, that fortifies us in our resilience, that grounds us in our power, and that opens us to witnessing and receiving the many blessings that occur all around us.
What we do during the first 20 minutes of our day sets the tone for the rest of the day. The idea is to make this time sacred. Do the things that empower you FIRST! This can be as simple as having the first words to leave your mouth be, “gratitude”. This can be yoga, this can be prayer, this can be mediation, this certainly can be your art practice (writing or painting or whatever it may be). Do what empowers you during the first 20 minutes (or more!) of your day and watch as those intentions follow and keep you full.
If you are finding it hard to make time during the day, wake up early. 4-6am is the most quiet and the most sacred time of the day. It is yours if you want it.
It’s not enough to crave healing. Healing is an art that must be practiced.
Tharp shares:
“My morning ritual is the most basic form of self-reliance, it reminds me that when all else fails, I can at least depend on myself.”
Our art practice has power, it has ability. We must continually make it a priority in our lives and commit to it if we are to reach our fullest potential. I believe that, certainly.
Do what empowers you.

Task #5: Rituals, Twyla & Inwood
I’m figuring out pretty fast...I’m not a natural ritual person.
I’m not sure if I ever will be.
Does this make me a bad person? Does this make me a unsuccessful one?
I’ve tried. I’ll keep trying. I still tap my toothbrush twice on the sink after brushing. I still drink coffee daily. I still fall asleep on my stomach first. That’s about all I do daily, decidedly or easily.
Do I have to first have rituals in my daily life down to an art before I can have rituals that support my art?
