The film reel. One of the most basic elements of the projection booth. Look at the design and craftsmanship here. The industrial designers who created this beautiful object were designing it knowing that it'd be seen not by an audience of theater-goers but by only a handful of professional projectionists. And still, they crafted an object worthy of the movies! The cue dot itself! Here you see four hand-scribed cues that together create a single cue dot on screen. Each of these four dots are scribed in the exact same spot within four separate film frames. When the frames are registered and played in sequence they create the impression of a single dot that flashes for 1/6th of a second in the upper right hand corner of the screen. This works in the same way animation works, and indeed film itself: still pictures projected in rapid succession linked by your brain through persistence of vision, creating the impression of movement. Only here, the cue dot does not move, it merely flashes for a moment. There are two sets of these cue marks. The first set cues the projectionist to start the motor on the projector that holds the next reel. The second set cues the projectionist to make the changeover. All of this timing is controlled by footage—literally the number of feet of film between the cues, and on the leader of the film that is about to start. When done perfectly, the audience notices nothing, focused only on the experience and story of the film itself. Spare parts line the shelves behind the film projectors. These projectors needed constant maintenance for the 75 years they were in use, spanning 1938-2013. That's more than seven decades of films, nearly a century of cinematic history, that wound it's way through these reels. That's a lot of thread-ups, a lot of changeovers, and a lot of movies. It's also a lot of oil, grease, carbons, and gears to keep the whole thing running. But more than anything, it took the attention and thoughtful care of dozens of projectionists who operated these beautiful machines during that time. Nights in the projection booth could be peaceful and serene. Once you got the hang of this job, not much changed. For the overconfident or lazy, that could be a danger that paved the way to catastrophe: missed cue dots, incorrect threading, bad splices, or forgotten reels, all of which are show killers. But for the masters who could keep their focus and remember the importance of the task at hand, the projection booth was a sanctuary of sorts, the rare job in this noisy world that offered a place to be alone with your own thoughts, or with the thoughts of the filmmakers whose work you were showing for the crowds below.
