I've been in an intensive Russian program for two months now and like, I knew Russian was a difficult language but I had no idea how difficult it is and sometimes, even though I know he's a fictional character, I just wanna be like, how the hell did Bucky learn Russian??? What poor HYDRA smuck was tasked with teaching the asset Russian?? I'm starting to headcanon that Bucky must've spoken really broken Russian, and only known words related to HYDRA and him as an assassin.
Like, maybe one of the reasons the Asset was so damn quiet was so no one would know he couldn't actually speak Russian all that well. Like, he's an assassin, not a spy, he wouldn't need the language that much. IDK. I just come to your inbox and complain sometimes.
I love everything about this.
The idea of some poor bastard getting tasked with teaching Bucky Russian, at first when he’s defiant and screaming and only interested in learning how to curse more effectively at his captors, and then later when he’s all Zappy-Brained McThousand-Yard-Stare, and he keeps forgetting any progress he’s made because the mindwipes aren’t that targeted yet.
The thought of the Russians being absolutely appalled by his atrocious accent and his butchery of their language, with his team begging the higher-ups to let him speak English again.
The mental image of missions constantly being interrupted by the Russians asking over the comms, “Wait, what are you trying to say?” and their nights being spent trying to get the Soldier to understand grammar.
Picturing the Winter Soldier mostly miming to get his point across.
Imagining the Soldier only being able to communicate in Russian with American HYDRA agents, who are as awful at it as he is, and so all the errors he makes in speaking are the same ones they make, and it’s clear to them what he means.
