The 'less than 300 words' essay which was supposed to be written in academic English which Amy will hopefully proofread for me because she's a fucking saint
There is no denying that society’s perception of beauty has been severely altered over time, which has caused many children, teens, and adults to become unsatisfied with their body image. This phenomenon has become so normal, that psychologists have coined the term ‘normative discontent’. Even worse, the increase of general body image dissatisfaction has led to an increase in eating disorders. Many claim the media is the sole cause of this problem, but just how much of that is true?
Though the existence of eating disorders can be dated back to at least 1684, the problem is becoming more and more apparent in modern society. ‘Unnaturally thin’ has become the new beauty standard, and those who are unable to match that ideal will be judged relentlessly by their fellow men. Mass-media is being appointed as the primary cause, a statement supported by the results of an experiment conducted in Fiji. An area relatively unexposed to western media, it showed a significant increase in disordered eating attitudes and behaviour after prolonged exposure.
However, there is a second, underlying cause resulting in the increase of eating disorders. After all, if the media was solely responsible, one would expect everyone suffered from this problem, whereas in this case only a select group being affected. “Research has shown that it is those with low confidence and self-esteem within each group who are most influenced by media communications.” The heart of the problem seems to be purely psychological; not caused by the media, but simply provoked and maintained by it.
In conclusion: the media plays a significant role in maintaining the normative discontent resulting in eating disorders. However, they are not the sole cause of the problem, if they are even a cause at all. One could argue mass-media is simply a trigger to underlying self-esteem issues. That being said, it is still an unwelcome trigger, and elimination of said trigger is not considered unwanted.
