We’ve all felt these kinds of emotions. Yawning distances that test our hearts’ resolve. The sting of betrayal. Bubbly, giddy squirming of endorphins, stomach butterflies, the desire to hurl bricks through sons-of-bitches’ windows and ride away laughing into the night. Names is the kind of record that makes us forget that people talk of a crisis in Vancouver personified by cold, distant people clutching iPhones, afraid to interact. It’s earnest without affectation, and rocks out without apology.

Known mostly by locals Vancity bubble-gum pop rockers Thee Ahs are aiming for the big times with Names! 10 of them! The album is a glimpse into what happens when your high school problems grow up, have to get jobs, and actually be responsible. A few years into adulthood is all it takes to get sick of other people’s bullshit and learn how to tell them off nicely. This one’s for the happy-sad indie fans of Camera Obscura and Belle & Sebastian.

New Year Records, from Glasgow, Scotland, asked if we could talk about Thee AHs’, from Vancouver, British Columbia, new album “Names”. Uh, hell yeah! So today, Those Uh gets to go international.
One of the first things you will notice is the astonishing vocals. The opening track “Olga” gives you a good taste for the musical aspect of the rest of the album. Soft riffs and sweet melodies, followed by hard hitting drums while maintaining lovely vocals. Great opener.
Now the second track, “John”, is a real standout. A very garage-y song from the start, they trick you into hearing some deep and personal lyrics. The first lyric of chorus, “Leave me alone / Or don’t leave me at all” deserves to be all over social media and getting tattooed on people. The fuzzy guitars come out in the verses, and it provides a nice energy to go with the songs themes. In our humble opinion, it’s the best song on the album.
The ladies, Davina and Sarah, get to take a bit of a break and we get Dan, currently the only male in the band, doing some lead vocals on “Andrew”. We then get surf/doo-wop inspired “Alexandra” (our second favorite track because we’re from Southern California and have a bias for surf/skate music that we can’t help), and math-y “Ridley”, which you can stream here https://soundcloud.com/those-uh/sets/thee-ahs on Soundcloud.
“Artemis”, a slow build up into sludgy breakdowns, “Davie” and “Rosaline” , indie pop/rock tracks, with Dan doing some more vocals on “Davie”, lead into “Davina”. This is another track that a favorite lyric. “I want you so bad/ It makes me so sad / That I / Can not have you.” The album ends on “Jaci”, which has some of the best guitar work on album. In fact, some of the best instrumentation of the album. Like “Olga” is a great opener that showcases what is to come, “Jaci” brings a flashback to everything you just heard.
TL:DR: Astonishing vocals to match the well written lyrics, great drums and guitars, nice blends of genres. “John” and “Alexandra” are our favorite tracks. Definitely recommend.
