Melissa: Melissa slid into her carriage, rereading the invitation for the hundredth time. She’d been invited to a masquerade ball and was not looking forward to it at all. She wouldn’t know many people and she wasn’t about to blow her cover by being surrounded by walking blood bags.
Thomas: Thomas grumbled to himself as his carriage rumbled towards the ball. Though he hated the necessity of finding another woman to woo, Lucille had insisted they find one at tonight’s event. Besides, he knew their money was running out. As they reached their destination, he jumped out of the carriage and helped Lucille out before placing his mask over his eyes. Holding his arm out to her, they headed into the party to greet their host.
M: Melissa looked out the window, seeing the manor up ahead. She pulled on her mask and took a swig of the blood she had in her flask before placing it in her corset. She carefully stepped out and made her way inside, greeting the host before finding a decent spot in the great hall to keep herself composed.
T: When Lucille was almost immediately invited to entertain the guests at the piano, Thomas hung around the outskirts of the room. Noticing the beautiful woman who, like him, was avoiding the crowd, he smiled to himself. He made his way around the room to approach her. “How is it possible that someone as lovely as yourself doesn’t have a dance partner?” he asked, turning on his charming demeanor for her.
M: Melissa looked up as a tall and handsome stranger approached her. She could feel her insides turn as he spoke, a faint blush creeping on her paled olive skin. “Perhaps it’s because other men fear approaching me,” she replied with a soft laugh.
T: “Then other men are fools,” he replied smoothly. Hearing Lucille begin a Chopin waltz, he seized the opportunity and held his hand out to her. “Though their idiocy seems to be in my favor as I find myself in need of a partner as well...” he flashed the pale stranger a well-practiced shy smile. “Would you be mine?”
M: Melissa could hear his pounding heart echo in her ears. She gulped back her urges and took his hand. “If you insist, sir,” she replied softly, walking with him onto the dance floor. Something about him seemed particularly off, but she figured the least she could do was dance with him.
T: “Thomas,” he corrected softly. “Thomas Sharpe.” He lead them out onto the dance floor and gathered her into his arms, perhaps a bit closer than was strictly necessary. There was something different about this one, he noted as he spun them about to the beat of the waltz. He couldn’t quite put his finger on what it was he was sensing from her, but he found himself intrigued by it.
M: Melissa held onto him as they began to dance. “Alright...Thomas,” she let his name roll off her tongue. She kept her eyes on him as they spun about the room. She noticed how close together they were and smirked to herself, enjoying the intimacy. It’d been so long since she’d danced with a man like this!
T: A smile spread over Thomas’s face as they both relaxed into the dance and into each other. “Pardon me, my lady,” he leaned in to speak in her ear. “You must think me terrible rude. To come in and sweep you up without even asking your name! Do forgive me,” he looked sheepish as they whirled around the room, holding each other closely.
M: “It’s quite alright,” Melissa laughed as she smiled up at him. “My name’s Melissa,” she added softly, keeping her eyes on him even as the song ended.
T: “Melissa,” he repeated, not removing his hand from her waist as the other couples began to vacate the dance floor. “Might I persuade you to accompany me on a stroll? Away from this crowded hall?”
M: Melissa’s eyes lit up as he mentioned leaving the party. “I’d love to,” she said in a hushed but excited tone.
T: “Then let us go,” he replied with a charming smile, holding our his arm to escort her. Turning very slightly to catch Lucille’s eye, he flashed her a knowing glance before sweeping Melissa out of the hall towards the garden.
