A commentary
The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last night was truly a heavy hitter, with artist Justin Timberlake, TV host Ellen DeGeneres, and musical guest Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (and a few other artists!)
Jimmy… who has worked for NBC since 1998 (with a brief hiatus to work in film), has been moulded into their lead late night talking head. He’s adorable, funny, appropriately geeky, and down to earth. Great qualities for their corporate face.
Instead of his usual monologue, Jimmy opened with History of Rap 6! Yes, there have been five other instances of Jimmy and Justin Timberlake showing off their mad music skills via hip hop/rap (I had already seen the clip via Facebook earlier that afternoon. Nice advert idea!) Although not new and fresh, it is a guaranteed audience attractor… all the way down to the bit’s 24th and final cover song, “Fight For Your Right,” while they walked into the seats. *fan-girl squeal*
Annnd we’re back!… to Justin and mixologist Eddy Buckingham teaching Jimmy how to make The Fallon (recipe below). Apparently it’s all about the proper way to mix the drink… by stirring. Selling Sauza 901 via a late night talk show with a cool, hip “new” drink… *shakes head* JT knows how to promote his brand. Drinks were followed by Justin’s interview segment where we hear a funny story about a photo mug, an Inception photo mug. Only possible thanks to Jimmy and he being such good friends. Oh, and we learn more about Justin’s life as a parent to baby Silas, complete with pictures. Justin is an established public persona. From his days with N'Sync to his recent global tour, we know what Justin is up to. Fans follow his every waking moment, where and when they can! (So of course he is “Trending on Facebook” this morning…)
Ellen DeGeneres, yet another established media player, started her interview promoting her clothing line, ED by Ellen, which she originally created for herself. (I’d like to say we have gotten away from asking women in Hollywood who they are wearing; this seams wrong somehow. But seriously, other than ED by Ellen, where do you find masculine lady clothes‽) It had been rumored that when Ellen confirmed her appearance on the show, she asked for a Lip Sync Battle… which she won. I must say I was surprised by Jimmy’s energy for his rendition of “Watch Me” by Silentó (especially since he complained about a lack of energy after his hip hop opening!) But Ellen’s version of Rihanna’s “Bitch Better Have My Money” (hopefully?) bought her some street cred. (Did you notice both her and Jimmy’s second song were recent releases by people of color‽)
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were promoting their new single “Downtown” with guest artists Melle Mel, Kool Moe Dee, Grandmaster Caz, and Eric Nally. (Which one is that skinny, spastic, weird white guy‽) Ignoring the all-black wardrobe and crazy-but-common hip hop lyric passing, this was yet another song about hangin with your girl…. on a moped. But, dem beats be dope, yo! (Whoa. Down, K-Dawg!) To any of Macklemore’s haters, dude isn’t appropriating a culture, he is adding his voice to their chorus in hopes of bringing light to their blight. Ya feel?
*sigh* It seems the manipulation of the Western people is in full swing. Using metadata, decisions about guests, sketches, and music appear to be geared towards soothing the masses, keeping them calm, docile, and cooperative. NBC is part of a very large, very established, very international corporate group. Do they have your best interests in mind… or their bonuses, and bosses’ approval?
*raises glass of Victory Gin… er, Tequila* Overall, great show, Jimmy! Perhaps next time you can talk about how the war in Oceania should be winding down soon, and I hear there’s talk of war in Asia.
Thank you, Lushworthy.com for writing down the drink!
