@pirelli_hangarbicocca In the late 1980s #MattMullican—in a truly pioneering manner for that period— created an immersive computerized Space, a virtual map of an imaginary city, using an absolutely innovative medium, a precursor of virtual reality and artificial intelligence. The work was titled “Computer Project” (1986–90) and was further developed in a series of lightboxes on which computer-generated images and views taken from this work are presented, “Untitled” (1989). In the show “The Feeling of Things” these lightboxes are installed in the Blue Area, dedicated to the world of everyday life. #TheFeelingofThings opens next week on Wednesday 11 April from 7pm. Don’t miss the event! @pirelli_hangarbicocca #TheFeelingofThings #MattMullican’s “The Feeling of Things” opening at #PirelliHangarBicocca on Wednesday 11 april 2018 at 7pm. Visitors are invited to explore the exhibition space, moving through a major rectangular architectural structure, split into five areas of different colors, the connotations of which hark back to the iconic cosmologies of the artist. Since the 1980s Mullican has defined his cosmology as the “five worlds”, through which showing how the understanding of reality is an interior construction, forged entirely by the imagination: each world corresponds to a different level of perception and is represented by just as many colors. Starting today with colors red and black, discover the meaning of each area and get ready for the show. The Red Area presents a series of works that explore the most remote wanderings of the psyche and subjectivity, introducing the figure of That Person, an ageless, asexual entity that, commencing in the 1990s, surfaced as the artist’s alter ego during his performances under hypnosis, a practice that he has employed as an artistic medium since the late 1970s. While the Black Area focuses on the theme of communication and language, presenting a series of tables and bulletinboards with a collection of works on paper tracing the artist’s entire production from the 1970s to the present day, featuring drawings, photographs, book designs, prints, pages of notebooks.
