car trouble

The old girl sounded like she was on her last legs, but he couldn’t afford a tow. Treating any vehicle this way was anathema to Serenity’s philosophy on life, but he didn’t have a choice—nor did he possess the equipment to do proper maintenance. There was a mechanic’s shop on the outskirts of town, not terribly far from his business, which always managed, wherever he set up shop, to perch upon the fringes of society. He kept mostly to himself, preferring the company of dogs to humans, though he was friendly enough. He did not relish the upcoming interaction, but recognize it as a necessary evil, so to speak. The vehicle snarled and coughed as he pulled in, realizing only then that he should have called ahead, or at least checked the hours of operation.
“C’mon,” he grunted, turning the vehicle off and pocketing the keys, standing and stretching from the leather seat and surveying the shop.
