Frank Riley and Mark Clifton - The Forever Machine (1954) Usually considered the worst of all Hugo award winners, this is a mess of a book. I only read it because I'm going through award winners and nominees since the beginning of the Hugos, and this being the second winner of the award after the great The Demolished Man by Alfred Bester, only highlights how really bad this is. The book is a mess, but if you only read the premise it sounds interesting, you have a machine that will give you eternal life but you have to divest yourself of all prejudice to achieve that goal. This has the potential to give you a deep exploration of humanity, society and prejudice but it just gets bogged down in dissertations on technicalities, misogyny, anti-psychiatry screeds with a Scientology flavour, and a really unfocused plot that really makes it a kind of chore to read. The story never focuses properly on its main subject, the characters are interchangeable cardboard cut-outs and the whole thing is at times impenetrable. All in all a complete failure with an interesting premise that feels like a complete lost opportunity and is baffling how it ever won any awards...
