Things I Learned This Summer
Yes, that lipstick looks okay with your skin tone. Every lipstick you try on will make you look like a goddess or a model or a normal girl who wears great lipstick. Except for maybe that shade of purple. Maybe throw that away. Or wear it. With something that clashes. It will make you look like a fashion student or a sorceress or a normal girl who wears purple lipstick.
Watching all five seasons of Pretty Little Liars and then reading all seventeen books in the space of a month is not inspiring you to write your novel. Writing every day is inspiring you to write your novel. It’s okay if you write “I’m bored” for twenty minutes and try out different ways of writing. Your penmanship will be excellent by the end of the summer.
Make more food with alcohol in it. Make more food with herbs you grow yourself. Make more food that makes enough for two or three or for. Make more friends. Do not make friends who make you feel inadequate. Do not keep friends who make you feel lonely. Do not lose friends who make you feel alive.
Make your bed in the morning instead of leaving it for night. Fold your laundry when it’s done instead of living out of the hamper. Go grocery shopping now instead of eating ramen for the fourth night in a row. Unpack all your boxes. Open the windows. Drink more water. Take your medicine.
You can catch the flu in the middle of the summer. It is awful. The heat will make it feel like the fever is cooking your brain. Keep the friends who will make you matzo ball soup and bring you saltines. Drink tea. Do not count the calories in the popsicles you need to consume to stave off your brain being cooked. Do not count the calories in matzo ball soup and saltines. Do not count calories.
Girl Scouts made you a better person. Your parents love you. You have really, really great hair. Resilience should not be your most important quality your whole life, but it is right now. Do not respond to inflammatory comments in comic book stores. Take out all your aggression playing by playing Mario Kart 7 and aiming green shells very, very carefully. Wear more lipstick. Write more poetry. Drink more water. Feel more alive.
