An estimated $103 billion will be invested in energy storage over that time period. 🌄🌅🌄🌅🌄🌅 The trajectory for energy storage mirrors the market expansion that solar went through from 2000 to 2015, when the share of solar PV as a percentage of total generation doubled seven times.  🌄🌅🌄🌅🌄🌅 This rapid global growth rate tracks well with the U.S. energy storage market forecast from GTM Research, which projects a twelvefold growth in the U.S. alone between 2016 and 2022, to reach 7.2 gigawatt-hours, or 2.6 gigawatts, of capacity.  🌄🌅🌄🌅🌄🌅 This growth is going to be driven by both cost reductions for batteries and associated systems, and a rising need for more gigawatts of flexibility to manage the ups and downs of an increasingly wind- and solar-powered grid, 🌄🌅🌄🌅🌄🌅 70 percent of global capacity through 2030 will be installed in eight countries: the U.S., China, Japan, India, Germany, U.K., Australia and South Korea. Battery storage uptake by households surges as grid costs soar 🌄🌅🌄🌅🌄🌅 Battery storage systems being installed in Australia look set to confirm earlier predictions that battery installations will treble in 2017. 🌄🌅🌄🌅🌄🌅 New data from the SunWiz 2017 Mid-Year Battery Report shows more than 7000 battery installations took place across Australia in the first six month of 2017. By contrast there were 6500 installations recorded for all of 2016. Current projections say Australia is headed for a total of more than 20,000 energy storage battery installations by the end of 2017. 🌄🌅🌄🌅🌄🌅 Leading the charge to home batteries is New South Wales, which is home to 21 per cent of installations so far this year. The shift to energy storage is now unstoppable. 🌄🌅🌄🌅🌄🌅 Australia needs to be looking seriously at energy generation using a combination of solar pv, wind generation and safe, reliable and recyclable battery storage. Beyond Zero Emissions have proven it can be done on a national basis. However, we need governments to get on board to support community projects that are working to make this happen. The responsibility can't all be left to grassroots people power. 🌄🌅🌄🌅🌄🌅 We just need to hope electricity generators don't just decide to promote cheap lithium ion batteries that can have potential environmental impacts in the future due to their lack of recyclability. The whole of life costs to battery usage must be taken into account including safety and health costs to the people mining and disposing of raw materials at beginning and end of life.
