Finished! It seems a little weird to call a book about Jewish refugees in the advent of WW II "overly melodramatic," but I felt this book was just that, with very clunky prose at times and an odd vagueness to it that made me feel disconnected to these characters I genuinely wanted to care about. It might have been a translation issue, but I feel like the story had good bones, we just never really got that deep under the skin. Even better is finishing said book and realizing how much you love it! The German Girl was a book far from my usual, preferred genre and I'm glad that it took me to another place and time. Historical fiction is great when the time in question is one that touches your heart. This story transcends from 1939 Germany to 2014 New York. It follows two girls; one during the beginning of WWII and events following September 11th. It's such a spectacular concept where the past meets the present and it totally reached my soul. If you're interested in historical fiction and the likes of All the Light We Cannot See, pick this up!
