Trying to Live
Martin would probably never be used to towns like this. Places in the middle of nowhere with so little going on that the only thing the townspeople seemed to have on their schedules was to send him the nastiest glances they had in their arsenals. He wasn’t exactly the friendliest guy to ever walk down the street, but it wasn’t like he’d said a mean word to anyone here yet.
He supposed that it kept them from asking too many questions about his life, how he paid for a house here in cash, or why he didn’t seem to have a job to speak of. People left him alone here, and as much as that was from a place of hostility on their part, he was nonetheless able to find some amount of a positive in it. Today of all days was the day of the week that he got the most stares of all: grocery day. No sooner had he picked up his first orange from the fruit display did he begin to notice the shopkeeper watching him intently. Today was likely to be another one of those days.
