//Ahaa exactly as planned
It's word vomit time.//
Steve was staring at the ceiling, head resting back on a pillow as he did. He had scared himself awake, his heart racing and he was calming his breathing in time to Tony's but he didn't feel any more tired. He turned his head to glance at the man sleeping next to him and smiled fondly, he was having a good dream - Steve could tell by the smile on his face.
He pushed himself up out of bed slowly, careful not to wake Tony as he made his way out of the bedroom to the sitting room where he assumed he had left his sketchbook. He froze as he heard a light sniffing noise and turned back to see the silhouette of Gwen sitting upright on the couch with a blanket draped around her shoulders.
"Hey... You can't sleep?" He moved closer and sat down next to her, now able to see her a little more clearly he could see how thin she had got, and the pale, scared look on her face and that her hands were clutching onto something tightly. "What've you got there?" He asked soothingly, putting an arm around her and coaxing her hand open.
He felt his heart leap and his stomach drop as a tuft of hair fell from her hand, they both stared at it for a long while, Steve too stunned to speak and Gwen simply too upset to try to help Steve understand. Steve felt tears slipping down his own cheeks as he pulled her close to his chest, she felt small.
Neither of them spoke as Gwen tried to regain her composure and Steve openly cried, not a single word was spoke between them.
Tony came out of the bedroom a few hours later to look for Steve and found them asleep on the sofa holding on to each other tightly with tear tracks on their faces.
...
Darkness Before the Dawn // Gwen and Steve
He had made his way straight there when he had heard the news, Gwen was sick, Gwen was in the hospital and sick. He didn't knowwhatwas wrong with her but he did know by the way Tony's voice had shook when he told him that it wasn't something easy like the common cold. He only stopped once on his way to the hospital and that was to pick her up a present, sick people always get presents. He shook his head at the thought - Gwen wasn't really sick, she was playing a game with him.
He could feel his heart pounding in his chest as he made his way through the clean white-walled halls of the hospital, eyes scanning each room number to try and find the one that the not too pleasant nurse had reluctantly told him his friend was in. Rubbing his eyes, he steeled himself as he finally found the room number, staring at the door for a long time - trying to work out whether he really felt brave enough to go in, what if she was really bad or she didn't want to see anyone - before he could even work himself up to knock and open the door slowly, poking his head through first before holding up a teddy bear.
"Hey - hey Gwen..."
