The really unfortunate thing regarding Witch Doctor is that I thought that it was a gay anthem for an extensive period of my life. The male singer "told the witch doctor I was in love with you"..."then he told me what to do". I obviously interpreted this as the singer being in love with the witch doctor, who cruelly disregards his feelings with a well placed walla bing bang. However, the song continues to say "my friend the witch doctor he told me what to say", crushing my eight year old dreams.

11. Have you ever gotten a rude comment about your writing?

This remains the funniest thing I’ve ever received. I had to read it three times over just to make sense of it. Then I read it a fourth time and realized, oh, they’re mad about the cowardice of my OCs and insulting their masculinity to express that frustration. The entire plot of the story revolves around the cowardice of my OCs. If I take that out, the story would NOT work, it is literally integral to the entire foundation of that story. I think about this comment every day.

I also get those generic “your OCs suck” or “this is a plot hole you are dumb I am so smart” and I’m like.... dude this is tagged idiot protagonists and this is an unfinished mystery that uses dramatic irony for tension... come on...

12. What’s your best advice for someone struggling with their writing right now?

I’m the type of person who has like a dozen different hobbies, and I rotate through them regularly! So if the act of writing gets frustrating for me, I just switch gears and do something else. Reset your brain! (This works for me because I have no qualms about letting a WIP sit for months on end. I abandoned a story before. I’d do it again. Don’t fuck with me.)

If your frustration is more technical, like “I don’t know where to take this” you probably have to go back to the drawing board and kill some darlings. Or find a writing buddy to chuck some metaphorical tomatoes at until you nail them in the mouth with your genius.

If you’re looking at your writing and thinking “this is shit” then open up your secret trashy self-insert dimension hopping fix-it OP power fantasy side document and write trash until your other WIP becomes competent by comparison. Oh, you don’t have a secret trashy SI power fantasy where you’re the coolest most important person in the universe who is best friends with all your favorite characters and is inexplicably and unrealistically badass? Make one. (Or you could like, write a story where you specifically try and improve your description/pacing/narrative voice, but I think my method is more fun.)

i feel like i vaguely recall from the andalite chronicles a sort of ‘must accept my destiny’ vibe, but it’s been a while since i read the chronicles (also yes seventeen is the oatmeal one)

yeah obviously it’s been a while since I’ve read chronicles too lol, that’s why one of my theories is that he just doesn’t want to live anymore, not even as a nothlit, not just because he’s been there done that, but also because he then was forced to give it all up to play the big damn hero because the Ellimist is a motherfucker (listen I’ve read the reviews, I know 17 gets panned a lot but I recall that book being FUCKING HILARIOUS)

We’ve all been wondering this for a very long time. Book 1 is full of plot holes. Solomoon’s theory, I think, is that he let himself get eaten to give the kids time to escape and/or that if Visser 3 had known that Elfangor was alive on Earth he’d have never stopped chasing him.

that also is a really good reason, to both keep the kids safe and because he knows that yes, he’d never get any peace, it’s better to die and give them a fighting chance. If visser 3 isn’t aware of the threat for a while, it definitely gives them a fighting chance to pull off their mission.

man you know what else book one is full of? fucking foreshadowing. Jake has already said by page 90 that if he has to destroy his brother he will and woof. Woof.
