#TheKingmaker is an interesting take on Philippine history from how the Marcoses came to power and fell, to how they're going at it again. Initially, I had reservations because I thought this was just another one of their efforts to challenge the history. However, this documentary proved me wrong. While it did highlight the "justification" of the infrastructure they built, The Kingmaker certainly did not shy away from how the First Family was perceived. From mass spendings to importation of wildlife where they displaced 254 families from Calauit, the world witnessed the extravagant life that they were living. As it went deeper, you can clearly see the character development of Imelda Marcos. She used her role as First Lady to call the shots, which even came to her advantage when Ferdinand Marcos fell ill. She was indeed running Malacañan Palace like Cercsei Lannister did in GoT with her Golden Company and the elephant she never had. Joke's on Cersei, though, because Imelda didn't just get a giraffe but an entire jungle of animals. Then came Martial Law. I was so relieved when they featured numbers to illustrate the tyranny the reigned on the Philippines. However, what the producers failed to include was those numbers were the only reported figures. Similar to current goverment's war on drugs. Imelda exhausted the victim card at this point. As the narrative shifted to the 2016 elections, I got reminded of the disappointment that we are currently facing. So many broken promises. But the cherry on top was a losing Bongbong Marcos and by a hundred thousand votes, no less. The Kingmaker shows us the illusion or the reality that this family chooses to live in and the political machinery that needs to be eradicated. Historical revisism, trolls, fake news, ill-informed and uneducated public, and the growing political forces that support them -- the second coming of the end of days of the Philippines is upon us. "There are so many things in the past that we should forget. In fact, it's no longer there."
