Be Resilient!
The amount of work required for success is seriously understated , underestimated and usually never even stated. This morning I find myself asking why we were never taught to embrace failure. Failure is part of every learning curve but that is missing from our foundational syllabus. We are made to think that a failure at one thing is the end of the world but that truly is bullshit , it’s just a preparation for your next journey. The emphasis has been on classifying you as intelligent or dumb rather than being trained to be resilient. We all have that friend from high school who was classified as dumb but left to the U.S and is now a doctor, nurse , an engineer or some career person worth celebrating. We have huge a problem with the way we approach the education of our young ones. Imagine that the dumb kid from high school never ended up in the States , he would have ended up jobless ,in Ghana. We must begin to appreciate the different kinds of intelligence: mental, physical, numerical, artistic … The list goes on. The fact that a footballer cannot write his name doesn’t mean he is useless. Having the best handwriting never got anyone paid , ok let me say not as much as the footballer earns. The focus must be on discovering talent ,nurturing and developing that individual’s talent. About 3 years ago I did a program in the States and part of the program entailed reading the book The Resiliency Advantage by Dr. Al Siebert. The book teaches you that it’s ok to fail. It’s ok to have made a bad decision, it’s ok to have failed in your exam, it’s ok to have chosen the wrong business to invest in but guess what that was all part of your growth process. The moment you see that this life is a journey and no one decision brings you to your destination , the better. However I must say that some mistakes are better made earlier than later lol. For eg. You shouldn’t be chasing girls at the age of 50, that’s for teenagers lol. (Thats my opinion, I don’t care what you say 😝)
. Loosing $500 early in business and learning from that loss to prevent a possible loss of an even greater amount of money.
This morning I write about failure because Warren buffet, Steve Jobs, Truett Cathy, Tesla, Bill Gates , Amancio Ortega, Henry Ford, Kofi AMOABENG, …… All failed at some point. But the most important thing is to build resilience. Get up and walk but don’t walk not acknowledging what caused you to fall. I think we are brought up to be proud in our culture because people hardly acknowledge their errors where I come from. Look at the Leaders : business ,political , religious, etc.People act like Demi gods because of titles rather than focusing on truth. It really pisses me off because someone who’s older than you in my culture will not accept that he’s wrong, made a mistake or doesn’t know what he’s talking about just because he or she is older than you or holds some kind of a title. It is total Fucken bull shit! (This is my blog , I’m allowed to freely express my self).
It can be a bit frustrating thinking through all of this but writing this is kind of helping me to calm down.
I’ll end by saying don’t compare your journey to someone else’s. Learn from your mistakes, study others who’ve walked on the same path you wish to embark on. Don’t be proud , you don’t know it all, someone will definitely know more than you do. Be ready to learn. Be resilient today , it’s ok to fail but it’s not ok to not know why you failed!
