I'm sure you noticed, but I wanted to point out the fact that they used Sweeney's musical leitmotiv (that soft whistle) in 2x08 both when Laura learned about his death, and again when she was walking away with his corpse. This whistle was heard in more of their scenes together through this season. I'm starting to think this is their "love theme", and that makes me HAPPY.
ME TOO. And if it does end up being their love theme, I love the song’s soft wistfulness in contrast to their general outer bluster, you know? That it speaks to what’s really underneath both of them - a gooey soft and vulnerable core. It evokes such a sweetness, and I’m sure we’ll hear it again in the future. Can you imagine hearing it when Laura and Sweeney first lay eyes on each other again, post-resurrection? EEP!
The name of the track is called “God of the Sun”.
And I found it on YT for anyone interested in hearing the full version. It’s LOVELY. They have most of the S2 soundtrack up for anyone interested, including the CEO/Tech Boy Bach/techno track I’ve been coveting since 2.04 AND a track called “Sweeney’s Revenge” - a somber piece that evokes the bluesy motif we first heard when we met Sweeney back in 1.01.
Back to “God of the Sun”, you might be onto something about it being their love theme, too, because we first heard it during the lily field scene in 2.02. And for those who missed it, @swandive made a very curious connection to the type of flower found in that scene. It’s called Agapanthus, an African lily - a name that derives from agape [Greek] or ahaba [Hebrew] and “denotes not only God’s love for humanity but also one’s affection for one’s spouse and children, brotherly love, and even sexual desire.” O RLY?
Ok after rewatching Treasure of the Sun I have a new theory. Sorry for my shitty english btw, here it is: In this episode, Sweeney is remembering his own story, and at one point he remembers killing Wednesday instead of the giant. We are to believe that that's what happened for real. Also, there's this other scene in which he is watching the battle and, before he flees, he has this vision of his wife saying something (I didn't understand it), but then the vision changes and it's Laura. First, let me just say that the Laura-as-Eorann theory is so beautiful! I know a few shippers who were definitely hoping for that, including myself to some degree! It really does suggest this epic love story between them that spans centuries and generations, and I think because we got the Sweeney/Essie-with-Laura’s-face, and them doing it again with Eorann briefly here, I’m so tempted to want Laura as Sweeney’s true love for all of TIME. And the idea that you said about him “outliving all of his soulmates” - are you trying to give me sad fanfic scenarios ON TOP of the ones I already have? Cos I think that queue is bursting now, kthanx. :D
I’m really curious to see what others’ interpretations are because there is definitely a case of Sweeney being something of an “unreliable narrator” throughout the episode. On top of that, you have Bilquis and Ibis interjecting and telling him how THEY heard it or know it, and that only adds to the unreliability of things. As Ibis says, stories are “bigger than the truth” - meaning they can change, evolve or be embellished as these stories pass down over time - but it also suggests that they can take on a whole new personal meaning for you as it relates to what you’re going through. And that’s how I took Sweeney recalling his stories and then connecting them to his current shenanigans.
So, I think, for me, I took his Fomorian flashback differently - that Sweeney really was battling his grandfather and not Grimnir. And that Eorann was Eorann and that’s exactly how things actually happened. I just think that he substituted Wednesday and Laura briefly because those two people and his ongoing experiences with them are foremost on his mind:
We have Sweeney remembering a time when he was part of and triumphant in an important battle, and in this episode, he later tells Wednesday, “You’re always my battle.” (I CRY…) For me, the reason why he puts Wednesday’s head in for Grandpa’s because there is this sense that Sweeney is fighting someone who, like Fomorian Grandpa, is a figure of authority that’s trying to keep Sweeney down, keep him from rising to power and possibly upending him in the end. Maybe there’s something about Sweeney that Wednesday fears, and maybe that’s why he’s kept Sweeney under his thumb for so long. Since we also know now that Sweeney is actually a god, and a pretty powerful one, it could be there’s something to this.
Then the Eorann/Laura substitution - I probably need to re-watch this sequence, but I think the timing of the Eorann flashback is crucial because it occurs right after Salim suggests that Sweeney’s never been in love. Salim’s savagery, by the way, made me laugh, like Salim going, “YOu?? In love? Lolz.” Also, I think what’s interesting here is that Laura appears right at the moment when Sweeney’s on the precipice of Mag Rath, the battle that would brand him a coward for years to come. If you take what she said to him back in 2.05 about him being a coward, plus what fleeing Mag Rath did to him in the years since, including how it destroyed his relationship with Eorann, I guess it makes a bit of sense (?) that he would put Laura in place of Eorann, since she’s also a woman he loves and has seen up close how his sense of inadequacy and cowardice has defined him.
But this is just my interpretation of what we saw in the episode - I think it’s also interesting we saw Laura in the Will James re-telling, and how Shadow kinda stuck Laura in there when he put himself in Will’s shoes. It’s all pretty ambiguous!
I love your theory, and I’ll just store that away for safe-keeping. And honestly, it just makes me really want a Madwife spin-off where we can get your theory to coincide with the modern telling of their story. Ugh. They just have so much potential for stories, god. :)
