Musical Monday

Hello and welcome to an actual on-time Musical Monday post! We are back in the year of the 2005 Tony Awards, and a musical that is still considered one of the most lovely, romantic scores of the modern era. This musical is one I always enjoy re-visiting when given the chance. Thank goodness the score has been preserved on a recording. Let’s head to 1953 Italy for a gander at this week’s Musical Monday highlight!

Awards Won: Tony Award for Best Original Score, Best Actress in a Musical (Victoria Clark), Best Orchestrations, Best Scenic Design of a Musical (Michael Yeargan), Best Costume Design of a Musical (Catherine Zuber), Best Lighting Design of a Musical (Christopher Akerlind)/Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical (Victoria Clark), Outstanding Orchestrations, Outstanding Set Design of a Musical, Outstanding Music, Outstanding Lighting Design.

Other: The Light in the Piazza also received Tony nominations for Best Book of a Musical, Best Featured Actor in a Musical (Matthew Morrison), Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Kelli O’Hara), and Best Direction of a Musical (Bartlett Sher).

Fun Fact: The Light in the Piazza was the shortest-running musical of the Best Musical nominees/winner from 2005.

It sure is a gorgeous score, and with the cast of voices on the recording, how could you know fall in love with Mr. Guettel’s melodies and lyrics. Should a showing of ...Piazza come around your town, you best get your ticket! I first saw it years ago at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley and just fell in love. A few years later and I saw a production at StageWorks Fresno and was reminded why I love it so much. But I digress... Until next week, go see a show, any show! Go!
