Have you? Have you been truly taking care of your acts of worship? Salah? Dhikr? If not, then I pray that this beautiful story I am going to share with you would help you get back to your game. in sha Allah.
What better way to start my new series but with the story whose birth was rejoiced by all of the Muslims of his time that made it one of the most significant events in the face of Islam. He is ‘Abdullah Ibn Az Zubair Radiyallahu Anhu, the son of ‘Asma Bint Abu Bakr and Az Zubair Ibn Al Awwam Radiyallahu Anhum. ‘Abdullah is known for his beautiful character, fear of Allah, piety, and generosity - yes probably just like most of the sahabah. But what really marks him is the story of his birth. You can read that full story here.
But I am not going to focus on that story, rather I want us all to have a self-check today through reading an excerpt from his life.
‘Abdullah Ibn Az Zubair is truly known for his worship. I am sure you have heard about companions who stood like poles during their prayers due to their khushoo’. ‘Abdullah is from this line of companions. Subhan’Allah.
If you have read about stories or inspirations on how to develop khushoo’ in your prayer, his name will always come upon it.
Let me tell you a famous one. (this must have come up to your feed a couple of times but some who share this story do not share the name of the person)
_____ One day, Ibn Az Zubair RA was praying and a snake fell from the ceiling and landed on the stomach of his son, named Hashim. The women screamed and the members of the household were alarmed and they joined in an attempt to kill the snake - which they succeeded in doing and the boy was saved.
All of this commotion and the frightening event happened and took place while Ibn Az Zubair RA was in prayer and not once did he look nor was he aware of what was happening until he made the tasleem and finished his prayer.
_____ Let this story sink in for a while. I know you may have heard of it countless time but I am sure it always leaves a new and powerful impact on our hearts.
Now, think about it. When we stand in prayer, it is very easy for us to get distracted. When something feels itchy, we cannot stop but touch it to relieve us from the irritating feeling or yet when we rush to finish prayer because we want to get back to our phones to check who liked our photos or statuses or tweets.
Astagfirullah. No one can deny that this happened to them once or twice or even still happening to them. Why so? It is because we do not truly recognize the one we are talking to or we are standing before when we pray. We do not take care of our acts of worship because we are not aware of the greatness or refuse to recognize the greatness of the One we are worshipping. Astagfirullah. Look at this small excerpt from the life of Ibn Az Zubair RA. It is a very concise story but it will leave us pondering for days. It is not too late to be better. It is not too late to repent as well. Next time you pray, keep in mind that you are standing before your Creator. If you can stand so attentive in your classes because of your fear for your teacher then how is it that you cannot be at least that attentive to the One who created that someone you fear of. _____ May Allah forgive us for our shortcomings and accept our repentance.
