Okay, so, seeing Elaine of Astolat/Ascolat getting equated with the Lady of Shalott again and feel an urgent need to make a PSA to clarify why these two people are different characters:

Lady of Shalott: never referred to as Elaine in the poem.

Elaine: not under a curse to only view the world only through a mirror.

Shalott: does not nurse Lancelot back to health after he gets hit in the ass with an arrow, nor again after he competes in a tournament while still recovering from said arrow.

Elaine: actually knew Lancelot quite well and legitimately died of grief when he rejected her (something women were thought to be incapable of doing at the time her story was canonized, as their affections were too fickle and fleeting)

Shalott: dies of a curse after looking outside to get a better look at Lancelot, who never even knew she was watching.

Both: float down the river to Camelot so Lancelot can see their bodies

Tl;dr: Their stories end similarly, but they are very much different characters.

This has been a public service announcement endorsed by both Lady Elaine and the Lady of Shalott.
