Waiting for a Wish

Hazel lay on the grass on her side. She hurt so much. She had never hurt this much before. She was used to hurting but this was much worse. She hurt so much she couldn’t even move.

Her mommy and daddy had driven her out to the forest and then told her to get out of the car as they got out. She had been so confused, not understanding what they were doing out here. Then her daddy had started hitting her while her mommy watched. She had cried for her mommy to help but she hadn’t. Her daddy had hurt her badly before but never this badly. She had cried and cried and cried and apologized even though she didn’t know what she had done. But he hadn’t cared.

She had felt like he would never stop hurting her but finally he had. She had heard her mommy say as she lay there in pain that they would report her missing and when she was found people would think it had been a tragic murder. She hadn’t been sure she had heard right. Murder. Murder meant kill right? Was she going to die?

Her mommy and daddy had then left, leaving her here all alone. I hurt so much. Am I going to die? Am I going to go to Heaven soon? Hazel suddenly wondered if she was in Heaven if her wish to be loved would come true. The wish she had made to be loved wasn’t going to come true with her mommy and daddy but maybe her wish would come true if she was in Heaven as an angel. The idea of being loved soon brought tears to her bruised eyes. Just a little longer and maybe she’d be loved soon. Just a little longer and her wish might come true.

She felt very tired and wanted to sleep. Maybe if she slept, she would wake up in Heaven. She shut her eyes, trying to ignore how she hurt. Just go to sleep. If I go to sleep it’ll all be better. I’ll be loved…
