How to Craft a Theme Statement for Your Article

Here are two steps to craft your theme statement:

Step 1. Ask yourself, “What’s this about?” The answer will serve as the subject of your theme statement. 

Step 2. What do you want to say about it? Then write the transitive verb and its object.

Examples:

• Theme: The Big Horn Mountains preserve the character of early fly-fishing in the West. 

• Theme: Journalism educators and professionals should quit bickering and start focusing on common ground. 

• Theme: Successful freelancers must master self-editing. 

• Theme: My father wanted me to understand the complexities and contradictions of war.

if i ever wrote an academic paper on fma lmfao. possible rough theses:

Silver Hair, Red Eyes: brotherhood deliberately avoids grounding the ishvalan conflict in a real-world context

fma 2003 challenges the viewer's own beliefs (forcing them to examine themselves 4 inequalities/-isms) not by exposing the viewer to violence (as in brotherhood) but instead by exposing the viewer to the effects of violence, both on the victims and the perpetrators

The Sympathetic War Criminal: roy mustang and the ethics of never-again-will-i leadership (i.e. does taking personal responsibility for one's actions, committed under orders, absolve one of the guilt of those actions?)

The Philosopher's Stone As a Metaphor For Human Greed: an examination of the consequences of actions in fma 2003, along with real-world historical examples, framed by edward elric's quote "there will never be a war that isn't, at least in some small part, caused by all of us" (the conclusion of such a paper would be HELLA given roy's response to that: "if we don't want to drive ourselves crazy, each of us can only deal with what is directly in front of us")

a critical look @ the women of fma, who are all relatively privileged. why is it that we don't have a significant ishvalan female character?

when are you gonna grow up? colonel mustang didn't keep you in the dark out of malice, you morons. i've heard about this hughes guy, it sounds like he was a great man. but mustang doesn't want you to be driven by thoughts of revenge. he wants you to realize that there are more important things in life. i bet your friend hughes would've agreed.

so he forces himself to search for the right path, not to be taken in by thoughts of revenge. he's an adult to look up to.

and why not revenge? when someone close to you is killed and you know who's behind it, how can there be anything more important to you than revenge? if that's being an adult, then i'm NEVER GROWING UP! that bastard... from now on, i hate him.
