Do you know what that space of options is called, between what is desired and what is written, where you are forced to amputate some of yourself to save the rest of yourself?

Mahjong night
Hosting a mahjong night was an event which I’ve sat on for literally the longest time, and I finally did it last night in a very small scale. The first one I hosted had like 8-10people and was fun but quite chaotic and I wanted to mirror that energy so I was waiting for my cousin to be free to help teach and play, but I realised that sometimes in the interests of just getting on with what you want to do you have to alter your expectations.
I had Tom, Vaughn and Jordy over to play. Vaughn has played before but I had to teach the other two. We played 4x rounds of a game and I think everyone got the hang of it and had a good time. Tom won most of the games which was good I think and we got to mostly explain the scoring system. Jordy also brought apple pie spritz which was very yummy and we had dumplings and biscoff ice creams. I drank a Coke Zero because I was feeling tired and I had a headache.
Overall it was pretty good, I would want to host more mahjong nights because I want everyone to come and play but the learning curve is a bit difficult I think. I’ll leave it on the list of goals because maybe one day this dream can be realised fully, but for now I’m moving on.
I am not sure what’s next, I am at the start of the season for Tower of God and would like to finish it but I think I am losing steam. Now that I’ve come back from South America, I have surprisingly little to do until the start of the clinical year next year, so I have been killing time a little bit. I have to do an ALS-2 course which I’ve signed up for and was quite expensive and will take up a whole weekend and I still have to fill in my CPD home hours which is the biggest waste of time. I think I have come back more fulfilled in that I’ve been filling my days quite well, and I’ve been keeping up with some chores and the house is clean. I feel much less purposeless than when I started this project/blog. I am happier doing things on my own and taking the initiative to organise them. I rely less on this project and more on finding other fun things to do as well. But it’s still a very important part of me trying different things and maintaining some semblance of hobbies I think.
I think my next goal will actually be to play a round of golf because my family is really into golf and play very regularly, and I would like to say I have at least tried it but I am scared because I am historically extremely bad at all coordination based sports. It could be a bit of time, but we shall see how we go and not if but when it eventuates. I think Steve plays but he will be quite busy with the wedding and I don’t know if he would actually want to teach me. I think Jess and Bonnie mentioned giving it a go once so maybe we can go to a range and learn and hit balls or something I don’t know. I guess we will find out.
Host another themed dinner/potluck
Honestly getting this twice was really demoralising so I haven’t been as good with filling interim goals and I kept it easy.
I had Nancy, Courteney, Andy and Ryan over for dinner and board games. I made pumpkin and zucchini fritters and a cauliflower and halloumi salad which were both quite yummy.
We played Greed and then Betrayal but the Scooby Doo version which was quite fun. I think I don’t like Greed that much, but Andy brought the game and the company was good so we played it. It’s similar to Yahtzee or a gambling game where it’s mainly just dice rolling and it’s hard to keep track of the points. Scooby Doo was good actually because the game was simpler than the original betrayal but it took a long time.
A simple night but yes, good to maybe start getting back into the swing of getting life together and focusing on fun moments.
Last week was very fun and very busy socially but it also made me lose track of myself I think, as often happens. I keep focusing on things which do not bring me happiness because I am distracted and I need to snap out of the whole thing.
I also need to start interview prep soon, so we shall see how that goes.
Host a themed night/dinner party
On Friday I hosted a trivia night for my friends and it was actually very fun.
I wish that I could say more but I wrote a whole post on the wrong account and accidentally deleted it and now I’m ceebs.
TLDR there were mini games where everyone drew each other and had to guess who drew who which was good fun and everyone had to make a mini round where they put in 3x questions. I had a lot of fun and I hope everyone else did and I really appreciated the variety and effort everyone put in.
I cooked a beef brisket a roast veggie salad and a tomato based pasta which went well but I spent maybe a bit too much time cooking and not so much doing actual trivia which was a shame. I also had amaretto sours with variant success and a Tinto de verano which was super yummy.
Overall I hope the night was a success. I have ignored ancillary goals lately and just kind of camped out for this one but I think I have to be fair to myself as it’s been difficult to find a balance with job applications etc.
Hopefully the next goal is easy and I can remember to incorporate it into my busy life so that I remember to do things for myself in life alongside the usual push pull of spending time with friends and doing job and uni things.
drove past James Franco filming in my town on the way to sushi, then watched Palo Alto
