On intervening days, the rainclouds held at bay, a parched wind blows raw, dust bowls emerging in places once teeming with life. Humans engineer solutions to maintain a basic level of subsistence. They accept artificial substitutes for an array of depleted natural resources. They evolve. They make do. Dark skinned children are sought to regenerate a more resilient populace, a girl-child prophesied to one day inherit the earth. The concerns that gave rise to the Black Lives Matter movement have reached new heights, siphons looking to rob dark-skinned children of the melanin sewn into their DNA. Anyplace we go, it is with full military escort, the windows of the transport vehicle tinted the same dreadful blue. Everybody's least favorite color is blue. The argon glass tints the whole outside world an odd hue. I pretend that I'm floating near the bottom of the sea or walking on the face of the moon. Even the Sun is a hot piercing blue spot, lined on one side in a delicate red arc where the double paned glass bends the light in two. Either that or the argon gas has begun to fail, the red outline marking a crevice like the inside surround of a door frame letting in a bit of the light the door has lost the ability to keep out.
