Christmas is almost here! I don't know if you celebrate this particular holiday; if you don't, happy celebrations for the one you do! In the meantime, here's what floated across my desk this week.
I'll go ahead and admit it: I'm a BIG time Trekkie. So it might not come as a surprise that I like following Star Trek related stuff online. One of my favorites, though, is the Picard Tips Twitter account. Bits of wisdom from different Next Generation episodes are condensed down into 140-character thoughts. Even if you're not on Twitter, the account is worth scrolling through. One of my favorite, recent tweets: "Picard management tip: Be willing to ask for help, even from people you dislike."
Speaking of help from others, in scrolling through my blog archive from last summer I found this post about setting yourself up for success. Not everyone is cut out for freelance or entrepreneurship. But if you are, here's some things that can help you thrive, not just survive.
Knowing yourself is as important as knowing where you want to go. Though this article about toxic office culture seems bent towards regular employees, it reminded me that you create culture where ever you go and with whomever you work with. And it doesn't matter if you're freelancing on a project, running a community book club, or whatever. So what kind of culture are you creating?
One of my favorite holiday movies is "It's a Wonderful Life," directed by Frank Capra and starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed. In the film, an ordinary guy living an ordinary life believes himself to be worthless. Through a miracle, he comes to see that even ordinary folks can have an extraordinary impact on their community. I love that message and I believe it whole-heartedly. You don't have to be a major world leader to change the world for someone. In this post, Mary Owen--the daughter of Donna Reed--shares 25 facts you didn't know about the movie.
Something I love about the movie is that it was inspired by a Christmas card. So on that note, here is a video Christmas card I made for you. Enjoy!
