VII of Cups!
In this deck, the Cups suit tells the story of Psyche and Eros. If you don’t know it, I suggest you read about it–it’s one of my favorite myths.
This particular card shows Psyche lounging in repose. Its meaning is: fantasy, illusions; living in a word of fantasy; unrealistic and vain hopes; dependence on external and even supernatural aid.
Sounds scary, right? Well take heart, because the card isn’t exactly condemning you for this habit, it’s just reminding you not to let it get out of hand.
We all need daydreams to survive. Fantasies, illusions, hopes, faith–all of this is absolutely essential to the human condition. The only time when it’s bad, or even wrong, is when we refuse to shake ourselves out of the trance and face reality.
If you’re the sort of person who is too indecisive, who would rather retreat into your own inner world, or sort of delays big, important decisions (or any decision) because you feel too overwhelmed, this card is reminding you to knock that off. Life’s worth living, and sometimes that means you have to put your foot down. Dreams, fantasies, and imaginary worlds we can retreat into (books, movies, tv shows, video games, etc.) are made all the sweeter when we’ve taken a step back from them and lived our lives for a while.
This card also reminds you not to set the bar too high. Unrealistic and vain hopes are the sort of things perfectionists do–it means you can never achieve your goals because you make your goals so impossibly high. Don’t do that to yourself. Break things down into manageable tasks, and take pride in every little victory.
If you find yourself relying a bit too much on other people, don’t worry. It’s good to know you can count on others, but try to keep your eyes open for situations where you could reasonably take charge, and be a bit more independent or proactive. Sometimes this can be something really small (cleaning, doing chores, cooking), or something a big more significant (in work, school, hobbies, etc.).
Basically, this card is saying you may be leaning a bit too much in the dreamy, staring-out-the-window archetype. Shake yourself out of it and remember to focus every now and then. That way you can have more fodder for your imagination.
