Ace cards are some of my favorites, because they always give off the impression of something powerful and contained within itself. They are *the* culminating theme of the suit. They are whole, complete, total. They are one.

This card means: Splendid beginnings. Creativity, change, success in new undertakings; “A breath of fresh air.” “New blood.” The sanguine temperament of the ace promotes experiment, reform, and appreciation of beauty, both of people and the arts.

This card suggests that this year is going to be rich and plentiful for you in terms of the arts–flex your creative muscles, dive deep into your creative hobbies and media interests. It’ll all only help you in the weeks to come.

To me, the idea of a breath of fresh air suggests you’re ready to do some spiritual/mental cleaning. Shake out cobwebs, sweep out the dust bunnies, get things in order. Not only that, but a certain degree of confident mastery is implied here, too. What you imagine, what you try to do, what you want to achieve, will all be things you *can* do.

Don’t be afraid to treat yourself to seemingly simple pleasures: if it makes you happy, then it’s valuable. And not only is it valuable, it’s worth devoting time/energy to.

Another thing about the Ace of Staves is that it’s almost like a magician’s staff, covered in grapes and ivy. It suggests an abundance of growth, almost to the point of it being miraculous–and it’s all coming from your own two hands.

Heyyyy, are you doing new year tarot readings this year? You did one for me last year (or was it the year before?) and I really really enjoyed it.

Hey! I actually forgot I did those lol but I’m happy to do a repeat this year. And if any other people who follow me want a reading, just send an ask.

The card I picked for you this year was The Empress, which is one of the ultimate feminine cards (along with the High Priestess and the Star). The Empress has more of a commanding personality and presence: it represents a woman top in her field, or at least confidant in it, who has achieved a balance of perceived feminine traits (elegance, poise, determination, passion).

The Empress is always a tricky card for me, but think of her like a Leslie Knope from Parks & Rec: she knows what she wants to do, and will do it. She knows what she loves, and will reach for it. The Empress is a woman who combines love, grace, creativity, art, and beauty–so in terms of mythic archetypes, she’s also wonderfully represented by Freyja. There’s also something sensual about the card, and suggests getting in touch with all your senses. Basically? Treat yo’self 2018.

The Empress also has connections to nature, and suggests that seeking peace/comfort in natural surroundings will only lead to benefits. Maybe start going for more walks (when the weather is nice), or getting a little plant to take care of at home.

The Empress is also THE foundational element of feminine nature, so it’s asking you to get in touch with your feminine side (and whatever you associate that with). It encourages warmth and protective, seemingly maternal caring. Don’t be afraid to reach out to the ones you care about and take on a sort of ‘mother hen’ role, as that kind of emotional candidness can only encourage open communication.

The Empress takes feminine energy and combines it with natural/Mother Earth aspects, so expect “the Universe” (i.e., something larger, something people might call luck or fate or whatever) making itself known with all the pomp and circumstance of an Empress arriving with her glorious train. This presence should, hopefully, be something warm and comforting for you–fall into it, don’t fight it, and take it with you as you go. You deserve all the warmth and comfort this card can provide.

You got the Ace of Swords!

This card is ridiculously awesome. It’s a picture of someone holding a sword high up, with a blazing sun burning brightly in the background.

In my deck (Renaissance Tarot, which I highly recommend because it’s awesome), this card means: Power, triumph; the suit of fire, and fire in its pure, primal state; in regards to the mind it represents the active, passionate impulses; dominance of will and zealous, even fanatical, political or religious conviction; the sword of righteousness.

That can be a little scary, since the meaning sort of trails off into creepy extremist territory at the end. But like most things, it’s just reminding you what not to be (dogmatic, zealot), and what you should be (active, passionate, determined, triumphant).

If you’re worried about being too meek, or if you’re more of a passive, reactive person, consider this a sign that this year is the year you come out of your shell. Put your foot down, trust your instincts, and follow through with your opinions. Be more outspoken and honest, even if you’re afraid. Your voice is worth hearing, your thoughts are worth sharing, and you, as a person, matter.

There’s also something a bit fierce about the card. Fire kindles and warms, it creates, but it can also burn and get a little out of control. Know when you rein yourself in a bit. If anger/your temper is ever an issue, consider this a sign that you need to give yourself room to breathe and relax. If I was a bigger nerd, I’d say this card is a good sign to play Dark Souls lmfao

Alternatively, if you know someone who embodies this card, either in a good way or a bad way, see if you can learn from them (either how to be, or how not to be).

This card kinda reminds me of Andraste or St. Joan of Arc, too. She had the full courage of her convictions, and her faith and compassion was so powerful that it made entire nations shake. Joan even has a famous quote: “I am not afraid. I was born to do this.” Tell yourself that. Let that motto be your personal mantra for the year.

You got the Nine of Coins.

In my deck, this means: Safety, compromise; balance, security; the cycle of nature; the protection of family; a season of dormancy which makes later growth possible.

In my deck, the Coins suit is represented by the story of Hades and Persephone. This card shows Persephone, Demeter, and Hades all coming to an agreement about when Persephone will leave the Underworld, and when she’ll live there. She’s shown as the center-most figure on the card, with her mother holding her hand on one side, and Hades reaching out for her on the other.

This year, you should remember that not everything has to always be active to have value. There will be times when all you can do is sit down and think, or relax, or just not do anything. Don’t be afraid of times of your life where it feels like nothing’s happening, or you aren’t going anywhere: it’s like the seasons, waiting for Persephone to return.

That being said, during these periods of dormancy, try thinking about what that idleness and relaxation can mean in a positive way. You’re safe and secure wherever you are. You can get back in touch with friends or family members, and learn from them. You realize that all the demands and high activity of your life (either work, hobbies, etc.) needs a counter balance to truly be worthwhile.

Sit back and smell the roses, and remember to take a few personal days here and there. You aren’t stuck, you’re patiently waiting.

VII of Cups!

In this deck, the Cups suit tells the story of Psyche and Eros. If you don’t know it, I suggest you read about it–it’s one of my favorite myths.

This particular card shows Psyche lounging in repose. Its meaning is: fantasy, illusions; living in a word of fantasy; unrealistic and vain hopes; dependence on external and even supernatural aid.

Sounds scary, right? Well take heart, because the card isn’t exactly condemning you for this habit, it’s just reminding you not to let it get out of hand.

We all need daydreams to survive. Fantasies, illusions, hopes, faith–all of this is absolutely essential to the human condition. The only time when it’s bad, or even wrong, is when we refuse to shake ourselves out of the trance and face reality.

If you’re the sort of person who is too indecisive, who would rather retreat into your own inner world, or sort of delays big, important decisions (or any decision) because you feel too overwhelmed, this card is reminding you to knock that off. Life’s worth living, and sometimes that means you have to put your foot down. Dreams, fantasies, and imaginary worlds we can retreat into (books, movies, tv shows, video games, etc.) are made all the sweeter when we’ve taken a step back from them and lived our lives for a while.

This card also reminds you not to set the bar too high. Unrealistic and vain hopes are the sort of things perfectionists do–it means you can never achieve your goals because you make your goals so impossibly high. Don’t do that to yourself. Break things down into manageable tasks, and take pride in every little victory.

If you find yourself relying a bit too much on other people, don’t worry. It’s good to know you can count on others, but try to keep your eyes open for situations where you could reasonably take charge, and be a bit more independent or proactive. Sometimes this can be something really small (cleaning, doing chores, cooking), or something a big more significant (in work, school, hobbies, etc.).

Basically, this card is saying you may be leaning a bit too much in the dreamy, staring-out-the-window archetype. Shake yourself out of it and remember to focus every now and then. That way you can have more fodder for your imagination.

For you, I’d say the card says that you should focus on new beginnings. Let go–of the past, of regrets, of guilt. All that dead weight can only crush you, and it’s only holding you back.

Not only that, new possibilities/beginnings have a wealth of potential that’s worth experiencing. If you have any artistic hobbies, now’s the time to get into them. Any books you’ve been putting off reading, any personal works you’ve been delaying–now’s the time to do it. Don’t worry about trying to justify it to yourself. The justification is that you deserve to try new things and to be happy.

A breath of fresh air and starting again can be terrifying for people who want so badly to reclaim something lost, but that’s just the thing. It’s lost. You owe it to yourself to look ahead at what’s to come, and make yourself happy both with what you have and with what you can look forward to.

The Page of Coins!

In my deck this means: An intelligent and sensible young person; dependable and practical person who yet hides mysterious corners of themselves and hoards secret treasures; an admirer of the patterns of the heavens, the makeup of nature, or the language of numbers.

The Page is sort of like a bookish, quiet person who on the surface seems very steady and peaceful, but below has so much more to offer. They’re probably a secret loudmouth or have quietly burning passions that they don’t reveal easily.

I think this card suggests that you should reach out to such people like this in your life, and try to learn from them and adopt their calm, measured way of behaving to your own personality.

Words like intelligent and sensible may seem like it’s encouraging you to suppress more emotional, impulsive reactions, but I think it just means there’s always a need for balance. Going with your gut and your heart can definitely help you, but there’s also something worthwhile about approaching life in a steady, practical, and fair view of the whole situation.

The image on the card is of a young person holding up a perfect golden sphere, almost as if they’re showing it off or they’re proud of their achievement. Try to take a step back and get the full picture if you’re ever stuck or worried: remember to be fair and take a deep breath, and treat problems almost like math problems. You can solve them, you just have to think clearly and take your time.

Remember to look up and out from time to time. Pay attention to the world around you, or to the stars above. Take comfort in how small you are: it means that you’re an important piece to a larger whole. “The stars appear every night in the sky. All is well.”
