I love gimmicky 80s records, so this was right up my alley when I found it in Albany: A UK 7-inch picture disc of The Motels’ camp classic, “Take The L Out Of Lover (And It’s Over).” A staple of MTV in its infancy, it isn’t a great song, but the performance is—it’s deliciously OTT dramatic, plus it has a great piano breakdown 2/3 of the way through.

“Only the Lonely” was released 43 years ago this month! Martha Davis – songwriter and lead singer of The Motels – has said that the song is about “empty success.” It was also included in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories on the in-game power ballad radio station Emotion 98.3.
